SHANGHAI – The Chevrolet Malibu upper-medium sedan recently received a maximum five-star safety rating from the China New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP).

The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu 2.0L Luxury was among nine vehicles sold in China that were tested by the China Automotive Technology & Research Center (CATARC) in Tianjin starting in April.

The Malibu received 55.1 out of a possible 62 points in frontal, offset frontal, side impact and whiplash collision tests. It had maximum scores in the side impact and whiplash collision tests.

The Malibu earlier received the highest ratings for safety in independent crash tests conducted in Europe, North America, South Korea and Australia.

About 73 percent of the Malibu's body shell is made of high-strength steel, with ultra-high-strength steel used in its A- and B-pillars and roof. In the roof, integrated laser welding technology ensures a rigid frame and maximum occupant safety in the event of a crash.

Among the standard safety features in the Malibu are six air bags, active head restraints and side-curtain air bags. Other safety features include anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, electronic stability control and traction control. In addition, the Malibu comes with the OnStar in-vehicle safety, security and communication service.

Launched in China in February 2012, more than 100,000 Malibus have been sold nationwide. Last month, Malibu sales surpassed 8,200 units.
