Seoul - Chevrolet today unveiled The New Malibu, a stylish performance midsize sedan, at Inje Speedium. It has begun accepting pre-orders today.
The New Malibu is an upgraded model that has adopted Chevrolet's latest family styling. It includes a cutting-edge propulsion lineup with improved efficiency and performance, upgraded safety with 10 air bags and the new Chevrolet Infotainment System.
GM Korea CEO Kaher Kazem said, "Having beloved by domestic customers with its attractive design and outstanding driving performance, the Malibu evolved again with more stylish exterior design and newly added cutting-edge features,” and "GM's latest highly efficient, right-sized turbo engines, in particular, will become the icon of revolution that breaks the existing prejudice against displacement and leads technology trends in the automotive industry.
Expressive design with Chevrolet's family styling
Previously introduced in the new Spark, Chevrolet’s latest family styling is incorporated in The New Malibu. It boasts a more dynamic and trendy design.
The New Malibu features newly added LED headlamps and more sophistically designed LED daytime running lamps, giving the front a premium look. Completing the sleek exterior look is a new wider dual-port chrome grille.
Redesigned LED taillamps add a premium touch to The New Malibu. They have a sporty yet sensuous appearance, with crystal LED stop lamps as well as LED auxiliary brake lights located on the roof.
The New Malibu is available with a choice of seven exterior colors. The two new colors of Kinder Blue and Dark Shadow have joined the traditional colors of Snow White Pearl, Switchblade Silver, Dark Scarlet Red, Modern Black and Cappuccino Brown. It also comes with new 16-inch and 17-inch metallic alloy wheels, as well as 19-inch wheels.
New propulsion systems with high efficiency and high performance
Chevrolet added to The New Malibu lineup a 1.35L direct injection (DI) E-Turbo engine that possesses the highest fuel efficiency in its class, and a 1.6L diesel engine that boasts outstanding quietness and torque performance.
The E-Turbo 1.35 engine – which is being adopted in The New Malibu for the first time in the world – is a member of GM’s next-generation turbocharged engine family. It integrates GM’s cutting-edge engineering technology, achieving an optimal balance of performance and efficiency such as reducing unnecessary fuel wastage by lowering the vehicle's weight using lightweight aluminum and continuously variable valve timing technology.
The E-Turbo engine further reduces energy loss by applying cutting-edge electric technologies, including a new electric water pump that effectively controls the interior temperature of the engine, an electric wastegate system that maximizes the efficiency of the turbocharger, and the new electro-hydraulic brake system that replaces the mechanical vacuum booster to lessen the burden on the engine.
The VT40 continuously variable transmission (CVT) paired with the E-Turbo engine contributes to maximizing fuel efficiency through a seamless transfer of power. The CVT – using a chain configuration that is highly efficient in transferring power – is designed to deal with a large amount of torque with outstanding durability. The gearshift pattern of regular automatic transmissions is programmed into it to improve the quality of gearshifts under a heavy load.
The E-Turbo 1.35 engine replaces the existing 1.5L DI turbocharged engine. It produces up to 156 horsepower and 24.1 kg.m of torque, and achieves fuel economy of 14.2 km/l in combined driving – the best in its class. It benefits from the stop/start system, which comes standard on all trim models, and is the first domestic midsize gasoline model to reach Level 2 fuel efficiency.
The European-developed 1.6L Turbo Diesel engine offers maximum output of 136 horsepower and maximum torque of 32.6 kg.m. The 1.6L CDTi engine – having already proved its performance after being applied in the Chevrolet Equinox and Trax – is famous for its silence and has earned the nickname “Whisper Diesel” in Europe. It is an ideal choice for consumers looking for a diesel sedan due to its ample torque and outstanding certified fuel efficiency.
In addition, a 2.0L DI turbocharged engine boasting the most powerful performance in its segment is being offered. The four-cylinder 2.0L DI turbocharged engine – which has been applied in All-new Malibu, Cadillac’s CTS and ATS performance sedans – generates maximum power of 253 horsepower and maximum torque of 36.0 kg.m. Combined with a third-generation six-speed automatic transmission, it offers optimal gearshift timing for a segment-best driving experience.
Outstanding safety with 10 air bags
The Malibu was named The Safest Vehicle 2016 by the Korean New Car Assessment Program (KNCAP). The New Malibu has once again raised the safety standard for domestic midsize sedans. It is the first in its class equipped with 10 air bags. They include newly added front-seat knee air bags as well as driver and passenger air bags, left and right curtain air bags, and first- and second-row side air bags.
In addition, new industry-leading active safety technologies offer 360 degrees of safety through 17 safety sensors (cameras, short- and long-range radar, and ultrasonic sensors) to prevent crashes or reduce their severity.
Available active safety features include:
• Front Collision Warning
• Low- and High-speed Automatic Emergency Braking
• Lane Departure Alert
• Lane Keep Assist
• Blind Spot Alert
