SEOUL – GM Korea today announced the initiation of the 2021 Distracted Driving Safety Awareness Campaign.

As part of GM’s Distracted Driving Safety Awareness Campaign, the new program aims to build crucial awareness among GM Korea employees and the community of the danger of distracted driving, a major cause of traffic fatalities in Korea.

According to the Korea Expressway Corporation, two out of three deaths in traffic accidents on Korea’s highways over the past five years were caused by distracted driving. Additionally, distracted walking led to 1,791 casualties over the past three years (from 2014 to 2016) and 62% of the deaths that occurred while using mobile phones. More than half of the casualties were those in their teens and 20s. (※Source: Samsung Traffic Safety Research Institute)

As part of its commitment to safety first, GM Korea is promoting awareness of the danger of distracted driving through a number of activities, including raising awareness of not using mobile phones while driving or walking and participating in the Children’s Road Safety Relay Challenge hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety from the end of last year.

GM Korea President and CEO Kaher Kazem said, “We encourage our employees and the Korean community to join us together and support the 2021 Distracted Driving Safety Awareness Campaign.”
