Oshawa OEM Stamped Products and Services

General Motors’ newly launched aftersales parts business, Oshawa OEM Stamped Products and Services Operations, is in Oshawa, Ontario Canada and specializes in stamping, sub-assembly, ELPO dipping, unitizing and warehousing of past model vehicle parts.

On May 26, 2020 Prime Minister Trudeau announced a contract with General Motors Canada to provide 10 million face masks to help in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to the need, part of the Oshawa facility was converted into the Canadian Mask Making Room (CMM) and is currently producing one million face masks per month with 60 employees supporting two shifts of production for the Canadian government.

Oshawa Assembly – New Truck Line

As part of a C$1.3 billion investment, construction is underway at Oshawa Assembly to support a fast response to strong customer demand for GM’s new family of pickup trucks and will include a new body shop and flexible assembly module. Oshawa pickup production is targeted to begin in January 2022 and will generate between 1,400 to 1,700 hourly jobs. Pickups are GM’s largest and most important market segment in Canada and across the continent. They also help GM fund our transition to the electric, autonomous and highly connected future we see ahead.

CAMI Assembly

CAMI Assembly will become the new manufacturing site for GM’s all-new BrightDrop EV600 fully-electric commercial delivery van. General Motors will be the first company to make electric commercial vehicles on a large scale in Canada.

CAMI Assembly currently builds the Chevrolet Equinox and is recognized both inside and outside of the manufacturing industry as one of the most efficient assembly plants in North America. In June 2014, J.D. Power awarded CAMI Assembly with the J.D. Power Silver Plant Award for the Americas recognizing the plant for its first-time quality performance. Since starting production in 1989, the Ingersoll, Ontario plant has produced over 5 million vehicles.

CAMI Assembly has earned Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCAN’s) ENERGY STAR for industry certification three years in a row and is continuing to lead the way to a sustainable future. The CAMI Assembly manufacturing facility in Ingersoll, Ontario is a benchmark facility, as a three-time winner of the ENERGY STAR certification, receiving its first certification in November 2018. Earning ENERGY STAR for Industry Certification highlights CAMI Assembly’s status within the top quartile of automotive manufacturers in Canada and the U.S. with regards to energy performance.

St. Catharines Propulsion Plant

The General Motors St. Catharines Propulsion Plant proudly manufactures the V6 engine, V8 engine and the GF6 transmission. GM’s recent investment of $109 million at St. Catharines will support added engine and transmission production. Once products are ready for distribution - they are shipped to 8 different GM assembly plants world-wide.

The Gen V V8 engine includes the manufacturing of aluminum cylinder blocks, aluminum heads and crankshafts. The main variants produced are the 5.3L and 6.2L engines. These engines end up in the following vehicles: Sierra, Silverado, Yukon, Tahoe, Escalade and Camaro.

The HFV6 engine includes the manufacturing of aluminum cylinder blocks, aluminum heads and crankshafts. The main variant produced is the 3.6L engine. These engines end up in the following vehicles: Colorado, Traverse and Enclave.

The GF6 transmission includes the manufacturing of prismatics and gears and the assembly of GF6 transmissions. The main variants produced are the 6T41 – FWD and AWD transmissions. These transmissions end up in the Equinox.

In August 2020, GM Canada and partners announced the completion of a C$28M cogeneration investment that enhances the operation’s competitiveness by lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reducing future energy costs. This project provides 6.4MW of electricity from renewable landfill gas to the plant which represent approximately 35 per cent of the site’s electrical demand. The cogeneration program recovers thermal energy that is typically considered waste to power and heat the St. Catharines Propulsion Plant, reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 70 per cent.

Canadian Technical Centre

Cutting-edge research and development, innovation and engineering are taking place at GM’s Canadian Technical Centre (CTC) Oshawa and Markham campuses, along with the Kapuskasing Proving Ground in Kapuskasing, Ontario.

The CTC has grown to become the largest software engineering and development centre for GM outside the U.S., and is continuing to hire new engineers to develop and engineer advanced driver-assistance systems, infotainment, electrification, autonomous vehicle software and controls, and innovative new technology.

In February 2021, GM announced the opening of the CTC McLaughlin Advanced Technology Track in Oshawa, Ontario. Situated on 55-acres just south of GM’s Oshawa Operations, the track will allow CTC engineers to put their “code to the road” right here in Canada. The track will support the development and integration of software and hardware for advanced vehicle systems including vehicle motion embedded controls (VMEC), advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous vehicle systems, infotainment, and advanced technology work to help GM fulfill its vision of a future with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion.

GM’s Kapuskasing Proving Ground also supports the advanced software and engineering work being conducted at the CTC. Covering 272-acres of land in northern Ontario, it includes a 3.6-km advanced test track along with 30 cold cells capable of reaching -45C. The facility also features a battery lab for conditioning batteries and conducting cold-weather battery testing.
