Side curtain air bags help provide head and neck protection for front- and outboard rear-seat passengers during side-impact collisions and rollovers. The air bags deploy from the area above the door known as the roof rail and take up the space between the occupant and the interior of the vehicle to provide optimal protection for multiple impact situations, which are common in rollovers.
How it works
Side curtain air bags are triggered in side-impact collisions by sensors in the B-pillars, inflating almost instantly. In some frontal crashes, the side air bags will deploy if the sensors determine the type and/or severity of the crash warrants the additional protection of the side air bags. In vehicles with rollover protection, sensors determine the likelihood of a rollover event and can trigger the side air bags before the event occurs, providing additional protection and passenger containment.
