Electric power steering uses an electric motor to assist a driver’s steering by reducing the steering force necessary for operation. The EPS system drives the EPS motor only when necessary, resulting in reduced fuel consumption. Unlike a hydraulic assisted steering system that continuously drives a hydraulic pump, the EPS system drives the EPS motor only when necessary, resulting in reduced fuel consumption.
How it works
Electric power steering uses an electric motor to prevent loss of control caused by the loss of the hydraulic assistance if the engine were to stall, as the vehicle is still moving. An electrical current drawn from the vehicle’s battery helps to power the system. The system’s control unit determines how much assisting power is needed based on driver steering operation and vehicle speed.
