Bluetooth is a secure, short-range wireless communications technology intended to replace cables between various electronic devices.
How it works
In GM vehicles, Bluetooth enables you to make hands-free phone calls by using your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone. After synching your phone with the vehicle through a process called a “pairing sequence”, you will be able to answer and initiate your cell phone calls using your car’s audio system. Bluetooth devices communicate by forming a 2.4 Gigahertz wireless personal area network or “piconet”. When you pair your Bluetooth phone with your GM vehicle, they form a piconet specific to your GM vehicle.
Only devices you pair with your GM vehicle will be able to access your piconet. When you make a phone call through the GM Hands-Free system, your GM vehicle uses your phone to place the call using Bluetooth. Your conversation is then relayed over Bluetooth from your phone to your GM in-car audio system allowing for hands-free calling regardless of where your phone is in the car. GM vehicles also offer OnStar Hands-Free Calling, which allows subscribers to use their OnStar system to safely make and receive wireless phone calls through their Verizon Wireless plan in a hands-free voice-activated manner.
