renaissance continues with the all-new 2005 STS, which combines the best of the brand into a luxury performance sedan that has been designed, engineered and executed to deliver precision craftsmanship, exceptional performance and sophisticated luxury in a distinctly North American package. Based on GMs rear-wheel-drive Sigma architecture, which also is the foundation for the Cadillac CTS, CTS-V and SRX, the STS is designed to compete squarely with world-renowned prestige sedans in global markets. From its Cadillac-signature styling to its performance capabilities, STS is the product of unwavering attention to detail and the result is exceptional fit and finish, overall harmony, refined performance and purposeful innovation. Crisp, elegant design: At first glance, theres no mistaking the STS as anything but a contemporary Cadillac, with its vertically stacked headlamps and light-emitting diode (LED) taillamps, signature LED CHMSL, wire-mesh airfoil grille, horizontal spline lines, and dihedral-shaped hood. Doors-into-roof construction enables more tumblehome, and the sides are sculpted inward, delivering a look of upscale performance with a lower roof line. In addition, a wider tapering sail panel, lower, sculptured hood, smooth wheel openings and a tight wheel-to-body relationship communicates agility, sophistication and substance. Seven-spoke 17-inch or available nine-spoke 18-inch wheels lead to large, high-performance calipers and rotors. Overall length is 196.3 inches (498.6 cm). A wheelbase of 116.4 inches (295.6 cm) and front/rear track of 61.8 / 62.3 inches (156.9 / 158.2 cm), combined with a flush wheel-to-body relationship, ensures well-grounded appeal and presence. Rocker treatments are specific to STS, bringing a sculpted shape to the vehicles lower line for presence and refinement. A single-piece fascia design, which eliminates seams for a clean, uninterrupted appearance, enables excellent fit and finish. While its overall shape brings a faster profile and more rake than its CTS sibling, its form is still elegant and graceful. The STS is the largest sedan offering in the Sigma-based family. The exterior takes Cadillac to the next level of refinement and illustrates the attention to detail apparent throughout the vehicle. The STS has a crisp exterior appearance thanks to precisely executed body and exterior dimensions and tight radii on major body components, such as the hood and decklid. Doors-into-roof construction and a superplastic-formed aluminum decklid ensure a clean, refined exterior. Interior gaps achieve exceptionally close tolerances, enabling a tight, well-crafted appearance throughout. Eucalyptus wood and aluminum trim appears on the steering wheel, center console, instrument panel and door armrests. The interior also features premium materials and fabrics. Available dual-firmness Tuscany all-leather seats are specially tanned for a softer feel. Also available is a heated and ventilated option on front seats. Natural grained surfaces on the door and instrument panel ensure an inviting, tactile touch, as do the headliner and interior pillars, which are soft backed and covered with a Monaco woven fabric. STS powertrain: In terms of performance, the STS will be available with the 255-horsepower (190-kw) 3.6L V-6 VVT in a rear-drive configuration, or the 320-horsepower (238-kw) Northstar 4.6L V-8 in rear- and all-wheel drive. Both engines incorporate variable valve timing (VVT) and are mated to widely acclaimed five-speed automatic transmissions with Driver Shift Control. The 4.6L Northstar is expected to deliver 0-to-60 mph performance at or less than 6 seconds. With the V-6 or AWD V-8, the STS is targeted to achieve 0-to-60 mph performance in under 7 seconds. Variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust valves offers flexibility, fuel economy and reduced emissions. The four-cam variable valve timing is a key element in the V-6s control strategy, which gives the engine a wide-ranging flexibility. For example, 90 percent of the 3.6L V-6s peak torque is available across a broad operating range: from 1600 rpm to 5800 rpm. In addition, an electronically controlled throttle (ETC) effectively coordinates the drivers intentions with the actions of the various control components. Chassis refinements, safety systems: While the STS is true to Cadillacs performance-oriented roots, a number of chassis refinements ensure a smooth ride that keeps drivers fresh and comfortable without sacrificing the driving experience. Road impacts and other harsh inputs are effectively absorbed and dissipated through ride-tuned tires, dampers, suspension components and bushings, as well as improved structure in body-to-chassis interfaces and additional refinements in the engine mounts. Integrated chassis control technologies include two-mode Magnetic Ride Control with performance or touring selections, an available high-precision ZF steering gear and four-channel StabiliTrak. StabiliTrak assists the vehicle in maintaining the drivers intended path by applying a brake force at any corner of the vehicle independent of the drivers use of the brake pedal. StabiliTrak uses an accelerator pedal position sensor, a brake master cylinder pressure sensor and a steering wheel angle sensor as inputs to interpret the drivers desired path and whether to accelerate or decelerate the vehicle. StabiliTrak also uses these sensors plus a lateral accelerometer and yaw rate sensor to determine the vehicles actual path. If the difference between the drivers desired path and the vehicles actual path becomes great enough, StabiliTrak takes appropriate action to assist the driver with maintaining the desired path. If the vehicle begins to snowplow, or understeer, StabiliTrak applies the inside rear brake to help turn the vehicle. If the vehicle begins to fishtail, or oversteer, StabiliTrak applies the outside front brake to straighten the vehicle. StabiliTrak is integrated with the traction control and ABS systems. Technology: Technological appointments on the STS are plentiful, purposeful and driver oriented. Applications include a Keyless Access system with a push button start, Adaptive Remote Start system (not available in Europe or Russia); Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC); reconfigurable, four-color head-up display (HUD); Automatic Advanced Crash Notification through OnStar; heated and ventilated seats; and heated steering wheel and Intellibeam, which automatically switches headlamps from high- to low-beam and back again when oncoming headlamps or forward lighting elements are sensed. Keyless Access enables passive vehicle and trunk entry and push-button ignition via a personalized, keyless fob. With the key fob in a pocket or purse, a person can approach a locked vehicle, pull the door handle and open the door. The same concept applies when opening the trunk. As a result, the need to pull keys out or even the fob to activate the door and trunk functions has been eliminated. The system uses passive and active antennas to detect the vehicle fob and its proximity to the vehicle. Keyless Access works in tandem with the vehicle security system, enabling the STS to be started with a momentary push of a button located on the instrument panel. To start the vehicle, the fob must be inside the vehicle and the brake pedal depressed. The Adaptive Remote Start system, which operates from as far as 200 feet (60.9 m), also automatically adjusts a variety of personalization settings in the process. When activated via the Adaptive Remote Start system, the STS based on temperature inputs begins to acclimate the occupant environment before the driver enters the vehicle. Once remote start is initiated, the vehicle: Adjusts climate control to previously set cabin temperature Begins seat heat or ventilation (based on feedback from outside temperature settings) Activates front and rear window defroster if climate conditions require it The electrical architecture on the STS makes all this possible, allowing various systems in the vehicle to work in concert. The vehicles technological backbone is a GM LAN Serial Data Electrical Architecture a high- and low-speed data network that connects system modules and ensures that information is properly communicated and shared between them. In all, the STS is equipped with up to 27 modules, located throughout the vehicle, depending upon options selected. Each module sends and receives information sent via the GM LAN. Of particular note is an available uplevel infotainment system. The cabin is immersed with 15 speakers from Bose Corporation. The Bose 5.1 Surround Sound system also has an integrated six-disc CD/DVD changer capable of playing DVD-A, CD and MP3. It includes an 8-inch (203 mm) VGA quality touch screen and advanced navigation. In addition, the system has Bluetooth capability, advanced voice recognition and OnStar. Like its Sigma-based siblings, the all-new STS will be built at GMs state-of-the-art Lansing Grand River assembly center in Lansing, Mich., beginning in the summer of 2004. The STS arrives in Cadillac showrooms in late 2004 in the U.S. and Canada. Beginning in 2005, the STS will be available in Europe, Japan, Russia, the Middle East, South Korea, Taiwan and Israel. 2005 Cadillac CTS-V | New for 2005 Vehicle Highlights First model in Cadillac's new V-Series line of luxury performance vehicles Low-volume, high performance luxury sedan 5.7L V-8 (LS6) engine with 400 horsepower (298 kw) and 395 lb.-ft. The Cadillac XLRs dynamic design and advanced technology has brought a striking new presence to the automotive spectrum. A luxury roadster with performance car roots, XLR underscores its vibrant visual statement with a performance-oriented chassis and structure, and a 4.6L Northstar V-8 VVT (variable valve timing) rear-wheel-drive engine. This combination makes it the lightest, most powerful vehicle in its class. Under its skin, the XLRs harmonious blend of technologies and materials add pleasure, not complexity, to the driving experience. These include a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, Magnetic Ride Control, StabiliTrak, heated and cooled seats, Keyless Access with push-button start and DVD navigation and entertainment. For 2005, XLR makes modest enhancements, including new Dark Eucalyptus wood interior, and Blue Steel exterior paint replaces Thunder Gray. Edgy design: The XLR is a contemporary expression of Cadillac's heritage of landmark design and advanced technology. Inspired by stealth fighter design, XLR takes the ongoing product-driven resurgence of Cadillac led by Escalade and CTS to an entirely new level. Bold and edgy, yet elegant and refined, the XLRs linear, crisp look creates a dramatic presence and modern icon for luxury and performance, yet it pays tribute to the marques rich history. The XLRs strong grille, for example, harkens back to Cadillacs heritage but expresses itself in a new way. The vertical headlamps, on the other hand, express the divisions current design philosophy. The XLR offers the ultimate convenience of a retractable hard top. By pushing and holding a single button, the XLR can convert from coupe to open roadster in less than 30 seconds. The top is made of aluminum and magnesium with composite exterior panels, a heated glass backlight and glass rear-quarter windows. The interior design epitomizes contemporary luxury. Unique eucalyptus wood in light or dark tones, combined with striking aluminum accents, provide a luxurious and inviting environment. The gauges are designed in conjunction with Italian luxury brand Bvlgari. Powertrain: The XLRs Northstar 4.6L V-8 VVT is a 90-degree, DOHC, four-valves-per-cylinder engine featuring an aluminum block and cylinder heads, and a valvetrain configuration with roller finger followers. It generates 320 horsepower (239 kw) and 310 lb.-ft. (420 Nm) of torque. The engine also features continuously variable valve timing (VVT); electronically controlled, hydraulically actuated intake and exhaust cam phasers on all four camshafts for extra control; electronic throttle control (ETC); low restriction intake and exhaust manifolds and cylinder head ports; close coupled catalytic converters mounted directly adjacent to the exhaust manifolds; and an air induction system designed for enhanced capacity and noise attenuation. The V-8 offers smooth, refined performance throughout its entire operating range. It is quiet, yet tuned to give the driver feedback from the environment. It operates cleanly and efficiently, with excellent reliability and durability. The XLR features the first longitudinal application of the 4.6L Northstar V-8. The V-8 is mated to the Hydra-Matic 5L50-E five-speed automatic transmission. Developed to manage the high torque and horsepower of the engine, it is one of the most technologically advanced transmissions in the industry. It offers three performance features normally found individually on various high-performance luxury sport sedans: driver shift control, performance algorithm shifting and performance algorithm liftfoot. Another advantage of Cadillacs roadster not shared by the competition is its rear-mounted transmission. This helps give the XLR a virtual 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution for superior balance, as well as providing occupants unusually roomy footwell space. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz SL500, Jaguar XK8 and Lexus SC430, the XLR is not only the lightest vehicle at approximately 3,650 pounds (1,656 kg), but it also boasts the longest wheelbase, widest track, lowest height and most horsepower. Architecture and suspension: The story starts with the XLRs backbone, upon which the cars dynamic capabilities depend. Based on GMs new performance car architecture, this unique and patented structure uses steel hydroformed perimeter frame rails, an enclosed structural tunnel, an aluminum cockpit structure and balsa-cored composite floors. Providing rigidity without bulk, and with exceptional resistance to torsional and bending forces, this architecture is the basis for the XLRs outstanding ride and handling characteristics. The suspension system makes the XLR a true luxury roadster with the handling qualities of a performance car. To this end, the design uses double wishbones at each corner, combined with transverse-mounted, composite leaf springs front and rear. The system is designed to maintain firm control over wheel motion, while delivering a composed and compliant ride quality. The XLR achieves a maximum lateral G-force of more than 0.9. It runs on Michelin ZP tires with advanced run-flat technology that eliminates the need for a spare and provides outstanding overall tire performance. Magnetic Ride Control: The XLR also is one of the worlds first vehicles to be equipped with Magnetic Ride Control electronically controlled, magnetic-fluid based real-time damping. The system uses four wheel-to-body displacement sensors to measure wheel motion over the road surface and responds by adjusting the shock damping at speeds approaching one millisecond. Thats five times faster than previous real time damping systems. The secret is the magneto-rheological fluid contained in its dampers, replacing traditional mechanical valves. Suspended in this fluid are tiny iron particles that respond to an electromagnetic charge. Adaptive cruise control: The XLR has adaptive cruise control (ACC). While not a substitute for full driver attention, this system greatly expands the convenience of cruise control. ACC uses a radar sensor mounted at the front of the car to detect objects in its path. If the lane ahead is clear, the system will maintain the set speed, just like conventional cruise control. When a vehicle is detected in the same lane in front of the car, the system will adjust vehicle speed to help maintain a constant following distance, set by the driver. Comfort and convenience: One of the XLRs foremost convenience features is Keyless Access. Keyless Access makes XLR a truly keyless car. A driver can simply keep the fob in a pocket or purse to operate the doors, trunk and ignition. The fob communicates with the XLRs computer control system via radio antennas under the cars bodywork. The system is intuitive and hassle free. The XLRs seats are both heated and cooled in the back and the cushion. A 7-inch (178-mm) color touch screen mounted in the upper center console gives driver and passenger access to DVD navigation; a nine-speaker world-class Bose audio system with a six-CD in-dash changer and digital signal processing modes; XM Satellite Radio (continental U.S. only), and DVD entertainment (available in Park position only). The XLR also is equipped with OnStar and a head-up display that projects key driver information onto the windshield. 2005 Cadillac Escalade ESV | New for 2005 Premium instrument cluster with bright chrome trim Burled walnut trim Bright chrome exhaust tip Touch screen navigation with 6.5-inch (165-mm) screen Riptide (teal blue metallic) exterior paint All-new cooling system with more powerful 160-amp alternator OnStar Gen 6 hardware with enhanced hands-free capability 2005 CADILLAC ESCALADE ESV SETS STANDARD FOR SIZE, POWER, TECHNOLOGY AND FUNCTIONALITY In recent months the full-size Escalade ESV and its luxurious offspring, the Escalade ESV Platinum Edition, moved Cadillac into the large luxury SUV market. Consistent with the 60 degree V-6 design, the engine employs a wide range of advanced technologies, including fully variable valve timing of the intake and exhaust valves and a dual-stage variable intake manifold to deliver outstanding flexibility, fuel economy and emissions control. The 2.8L V-6 comes mated to a new six-speed manual transmission or the Hydra-Matic 5L40-E automatic transmission. 3.6L V-6 VVT engine: The 3.6L V-6 VVT debuted in the 2004 CTS, earning praise from consumers and media alike. For 2005, the 3.6L V-6 VVT comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission. The 3.6L V-6 is an all-aluminum, 60-degree dual overhead cam, four-valves-per-cylinder design. Like the 2.8L V-6, it has fully variable valve timing and a dual-stage variable intake manifold. The 3.6L V-6 develops 255 horsepower (190 kw) at 6200 rpm and 252 lb.-ft. (342 Nm) of torque at 3200 rpm. Two transmissions: New for 2005, the CTS will be offered with an Aisin six-speed manual transmission. Eagerly anticipated by performance enthusiasts, this is the first time the 3.6L V-6 VVT will be offered with a manual transmission. The 2.8L also is available with the six-speed manual. The six-speed transmission is fully synchronized (including reverse), with a single overdrive. This allows for lower propshaft speeds and improved NVH. The transmission is rated for 400 Nm (295 horsepower) and its unique architecture is such that the gear inertias are lower, resulting in significantly lower shift efforts compared to conventional RWD manual transmissions. The compact, state-of-the-art 5L40-E automatic transmission features a full complement of advanced electronic control capabilities. These include a shift mode button that allows the driver to select between "sport," "winter" and "economy" modes. Another electronic feature is also a first for GM: engine braking in all five gears, giving the automatic the same sporty feel as a downshifting manual. Dramatic design: The design team gave CTS a uniquely Cadillac look. Its lean, chiseled body features sheer forms, sharp edges and crisp intersecting lines that honor Cadillac's storied past and look to the future. Conventional Cadillac cues, including the grille and exterior lighting, have been updated for the CTS. Cadillac's traditional vertical headlamps and taillamps first appeared in 1965, and CTS refines the tradition. CTS' integrated headlamps convey the high-tech image of optical instruments and high-end camera lenses. Thin and tall, they create more space for the large, louvered grille. The interior provides all the amenities that luxury customers have come to expect, with the emphasis on comfort and convenience. It uses warm, rich materials to contrast with the cool, computer-like, high-tech cockpit appearance, balancing the contemporary feel with touches of traditional luxury. Wooden surfaces are used sparingly on the steering wheel, shifter knob and door pulls. New Sigma architecture The CTS' Sigma architecture is the first usage of ultra high-strength steel at GM, and the first time the steel has been incorporated as a welded member of the structure. In the past, ultra high-strength steel was limited to applications such as bumpers, where bolts were used for attachment. Ultra high-strength steel permits the use of thinner, lighter steel, which reduces mass yet still allows proper energy absorption and reduces intrusion into the passenger compartment in an accident. Comprehensive safety and security: CTS has six air bags, including dual-stage frontal air bags for front-seat passengers. Head-curtain side air bags help protect front and outboard rear passengers. It also has Xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) halogen headlamps, StabiliTrak and OnStar, and several other safety and security features. Indeed, the vision has been achieved. A sport utility truck, with elements of a luxury SUV and pickup truck, the Escalade EXT is Cadillacs novel, groundbreaking interpretation of the genre, and a bold, brash symbol of Cadillacs reinvigoration. The Escalade EXT has exposed Cadillac to new generations and categories of buyers who might not have considered the marque in the past. Like its older sibling, Escalade, the EXT has appeared in music videos and custom wheel advertisements and is often found in the garages of professional athletes and celebrities. For 2005, subtle refinements and new standard equipment improve the Escalade EXT. The primary change is a highly detailed, premium instrument panel gauge cluster with bright chromed rings around the gauges and more detailed graphics. In addition, new burled walnut trim replaces traditional Zebrano trim. All models receive a new bright chrome exhaust tip. The navigation system now uses a touch screen rather than a joystick, and the screen size increases to 6.5 inches (165 mm) for easier use. Powertrains: The best-in-class H.O. Vortec 6000 6.0L V-8 cranks out 345 horsepower (257 kw) at 5200 rpm and 380 lb.-ft. of torque (515 Nm) at 4000 rpm. The engine links to the Hydra-Matic 4L65-E heavy-duty electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Electronic throttle control provides precise throttle progression. Safety features: The Escalade EXT features automatic passenger-sensing air bag suppression with a passenger sensing system (PSS) that automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to help protect smaller occupants. The Escalade EXT also has dual-stage frontal air bags for supplemental protection for front seat passengers. Dual-stage frontal air bags are designed to help reduce the risk of air bag-induced injury. When the air bag systems control unit detects an impact, it determines whether the crash is severe enough to trigger a deployment, and whether the primary amount of inflation is sufficient. The primary stage alone will deploy in most frontal impacts requiring the supplemental protection of an air bag, while a secondary stage is designed to deploy in more severe frontal collisions. Driver confidence is assured in unpredictable weather conditions with Escalades full-time all-wheel-drive system, four-channel StabiliTrak system and Borg-Warner one-speed full-time open-differential transfer case. Any of the four wheels can be independently controlled with the four-channel system, offering more stable, controlled ABS stops, improved fuel economy, reliability and serviceability, and greater yaw-stability control. Benefits include reduced understeer and proper brake pressure for traction and yaw stability control at all times. Exterior: The Escalade EXT is unmistakably a Cadillac with its sheer, chiseled forms and bold styling. In its standard configuration, EXT offers a roomy, luxurious, comfortable five-passenger cab and a 5-foot, 3-inch (1.6 m) long cargo box. Luxury customers requiring more cargo room can easily convert the reconfigurable Midgate system in a few minutes without any tools, extending the bed to a full 8-foot, 1-inch (2.46 m). The Midgate folds into the interior of the cab to create a 4-foot by 8-foot (1.2 m by 2.4 m) cargo area to transport large items, from artwork to a large screen TV. Items are protected from the elements and theft by a standard three-piece cargo cover and lockable tailgate. The cargo bed also offers protection for items secured inside. The sides of the cargo box, along with the Midgate and tailgate, are constructed of Pro-Tec composite material. The rear window is removable to allow for additional cargo space or for added air circulation. Interior: For audio/visual aficionados, Escalade EXT has an available DVD rear seat entertainment system with a 7-inch (178-mm) flip-down screen. It also includes a DVD navigation system, standard XM Satellite Radio (continental U.S. only) and a premium seven-speaker Bose sound system with an in-dash six-disc changer and digital signal processing for superb imaging, stage and spectral response. The navigation system uses an onboard computer and vehicle sensors to interact with the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the DVD map database to provide precise vehicle location and to calculate a driving route to a destination. It can help locate and provide routes to addresses, intersections, and points of interest such as ATMs, restaurants, hospitals and museums all with visual and voice guided directions. 2005 CADILLAC ESCALADE | New for 2005 Premium instrument cluster with bright chrome trim Burled walnut trim Optional 20-inch wheels on AWD Bright chrome exhaust tip Touch-screen navigation with 6.5-inch (165-mm) screen Riptide (teal blue metallic) exterior paint Improved cooling system with more powerful alternator 2WD model receives Vortec High Output 6000 6.0L V98 (LQ9) engine with 345 horsepower (257 kw) (midyear) OnStar Gen 6 hardware with enhanced hands-free capability ESCALADE ATTRACTS NEW BUYERS TO CADILLAC In a few short years, Escalade has taken its place as a leader in the luxury SUV market, and as the starting point for Cadillac's product renaissance. Powertrains: The best-in-class High Output Vortec 6000 6.0L V-8 makes the all-wheel-drive Escalade the world's most powerful full-size SUV with345 horsepower (257 kw) at 5200 rpm and 380 lb.-ft. of torque (515 Nm) at 4000 rpm. The engine links to the Hydra-Matic 4L60-E heavy-duty electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. The two-wheel-drive model will continue to use the 295-horsepower (220 kw) Vortec 5300 5.3L V-8 until midyear, when it moves up to the 6.0L V-8. The Vortec 5300 is coupled to a standard Hydra-Matic 4L65-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Both engines feature electronic throttle control. Occupant protection: The Escalade has GM's Passenger Sensing System (PSS). PSS uses the latest sensing technology to turn the front passenger air bag on or off. If the sensor system detects an unoccupied front passenger seat or the presence of a smaller occupant, the front passenger air bag is designed to automatically turn off so it would not deploy in the event of a frontal collision. A status indicator on the instrument panel alerts occupants that the passenger air bag is on or off. Even with this system, GM strongly recommends to restrain child passengers in an appropriate child seat placed in the second or third row of the vehicle. Never install a rear-facing infant seat in front of an active air bag. GM also recommends that all children 12 and under ride in the rear seat when possible. Side impact air bags are also standard for both the driver and front passenger. In addition, side-impact door beams and energy-absorbing foam blocks on the interior help protect occupants against head injuries. The Escalade also has dual-stage frontal air bags for supplemental protection for front seat passengers. Dual-stage frontal air bags are designed to help reduce the risk of air bag-induced injury. When the air bag system's control unit detects an impact, it determines whether the crash is severe enough to trigger a deployment, and whether the primary amount of inflation is sufficient. The primary stage alone will deploy in most frontal impacts requiring the supplemental protection of an air bag, while a secondary stage is designed to deploy in more severe frontal collisions. Driver confidence is assured in unpredictable weather conditions with Escalade's full-time all-wheel-drive system, four-channel StabiliTrak system and a Borg-Warner one-speed full-time open-differential transfer case. Any of the four wheels can be independently controlled with the four-channel system, offering more stable, controlled ABS stops, improved fuel economy, reliability and serviceability, and greater yaw-stability control. Benefits include reduced understeer and proper brake pressure for traction and yaw stability control at all times.
