GRAND BLANC, Mich. – Two new exciting “LS” engine offerings – an LS3 crate engine and an LSX tall-deck cylinder block – add to GM Performance Parts’ (GMPP) growing lineup of Gen III and Gen IV crate engines, partial engines and engine components. The new products enhance the choices for late-model performance enthusiasts, muscle car and street rod builders, and racers of all stripes.
The LS engine family was introduced a decade ago with the 5.7L LS1 and is renowned for its strength, ease of assembly and maintenance, and tremendous performance potential. GMPP is continually adding to its variety of high-performance, economical components to suit the goals of customers from all corners of the performance world.
Here is a closer look at the new products:
LS3 details
The LS3 crate engine – part number 19201992 – is the same power plant found in the 2008 Corvette. It is rated at 430 horsepower and 424 lb.-ft. of torque. This new iteration of the storied small-block family features a larger-bore cylinder block (4.06 inches), high-flow, LS7/L92-style cylinder heads; larger-diameter pistons; revised camshaft and camshaft timing; revised valvetrain with offset intake rocker arms; high-flow intake manifold; high-flow fuel injectors from the Z06’s LS7 engine; and a new engine beauty cover. The LS3 also features an aluminum cylinder block with revisions and machining in the bulkheads that enhance its strength and improve bay to bay breathing.
Installing the LS3 crate engine in everything from late-model cars and trucks to vintage muscle cars or street rods is made easy with the use of GM Performance Parts’ new LS3 engine controller kit – a “plug-and-play” system that enables the user to get the crate engine running without the need for a “stand alone” control system, trial-and-error tuning or timing adjustments. The LS3 engine controller kit carries part number 19201861.
LSX tall deck features
GM Performance Parts introduced the LSX cylinder block a year ago, giving street and racing enthusiasts an economical, very strong foundation on which to build high-horsepower “LS” engines. The new LSX tall deck cylinder block – part number 19166097 – builds on those attributes with approximately one half-inch of additional cylinder deck height – 9.75 inches – giving builders extra room to build larger-displacement “stroker” engines.
The LSX tall-deck block is delivered semi-finished, with 3.990-inch cylinder bores. The bores can be safely machined to 4.250 inches which, combined with the new, 9.750-inch deck height, supports displacement of up to 500 cubic inches, or more.
The LSX tall deck block accepts all Gen III, Gen IV and LSX reciprocating components, oiling systems and external accessories. All “LS”-family cylinder heads bolt on, too, and provisions are built into the block for LSX six-bolt cylinder heads. The dimensions of the tall deck block necessitate custom intake manifolds or spacers for existing manifolds, as the space between the intake port mating surfaces of the heads is wider than the standard-deck LSX block.
GM Performance Parts is designing a variety of intake manifolds to bolt onto LSX tall-deck engines and will offer them when design and manufacturing validation is completed.
GM Performance Parts crate engines undergo a 50-hour, full-throttle engine dynamometer validation, requiring the engines perform from peak horsepower to peak torque. GMPP also installs crate engines in its own engineering vehicles for ongoing testing and continuous improvement. This commitment to quality and durability allows General Motors to back GM Performance Parts crate engines with a 24-month / 50,000-mile warranty (whichever occurs first). All GM Performance Parts components carry a 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty.
Enthusiasts who crave the latest technology, maximum horsepower and the expertise and confidence backed by GM can purchase GMPP crate engines, blocks, heads and components from GMPP Authorized Center dealers or any other GM dealership nationwide.
