Fleet & Commercial Operations
For immediate release
General Motors’ approach of listening to its customers also applies to the company’s extensive lineup of law enforcement vehicles. Comprehensive research and one-on-one meetings with law enforcement agencies have resulted in vehicles that deliver power, loads of standard features and unmatched durability.
GM’s law enforcement lineup also delivers plenty of flexibility – a sedan for patrol or undercover use, an SUV for on- or off-road patrol, and full-size prisoner transport vans that can carry up to 14 passengers or can be used as tactical units. Add the fact that all of these vehicles are specifically designed from inception as law enforcement vehicles, and the result is a great deal of additional convenience and lower-cost upfitting.
Chevrolet Impala Police
Available in either police package (9C1) or undercover police package (9C3) Chevrolet Impala Police delivers power, room and style. For 2009 the additional safety of side curtain air bags is included in Impala’s standard equipment. These air bags provide enhanced protection in the event of a side impact and stay inflated longer to provide greater protection in the event of a vehicle rollover.
Impala Police is powered by a 3.9L V-6 engine that uses variable valve timing and produces 233 horsepower (174 kW)* and 240 lb.-ft. (325 Nm) of torque.* The 3.9L produces 224 horsepower (167 kW)* and 235 lb.-ft. (319 Nm) of torque in states with lower emissions requirements. The 3.9L-equipped Impala also delivers E85 FlexFuel capability, enabling it to be fueled with a renewable energy source derived from domestically grown crops. The engine is mated to the Hydra-Matic 4T65 electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission.
The Impala's police package is equipped with P225/60R16 V-rated tires mounted on heavy-duty 16-inch steel wheels. To further ensure continued operation at high speeds, Impala features a standard external air-to-oil engine cooler, a transmission oil cooler and power steering oil cooler. Optimal vehicle handling is assured by Impala's four-wheel independent suspension. It features reinforced front struts, a reinforced aluminum engine cradle and heavy-duty front and rear stabilizer bars. The Impala Police car is equipped with anti-lock disc brakes with police calibration and heavy-duty front brake pads.
Impala Police also delivers a great deal of convenience, including a single-key locking system that requires only one key to operate the doors, the decklid and the ignition; battery run-down protection; plug and play electrical wiring harnesses; and lockout protection, which prevents the power door locks from locking the driver's door when the keys are in the ignition.
The Impala police package features six-way power, cloth front bucket seats, while the undercover package features a 40/20/40-split bench front seat with six-way power adjustments for the driver. All seats – including the rear bench seat – are made of heavy-duty materials that stand up to continual use.
Other interior comfort and convenience features include air conditioning; tinted solar windshield and backlight; solar-ray side glass; power door locks with lockout protection; adjustable tilt steering wheel; inside trunk release; and power windows with rear window lockout protection.
Chevrolet Tahoe Police Vehicle
Engineered for high-speed and severe-duty law enforcement use, the Chevrolet Tahoe Police Vehicle provides law enforcement agencies with utility, cargo room and visibility.
Every police vehicle must be capable of frequently running at high speeds, and Tahoe Police Vehicle is up to the challenge. It’s outfitted with H-rated, P265/60R17 blackwall Goodyear RSA tires (compared to S-rated on production models). These are mounted on 17-inch steel wheels. Tahoe Police Vehicle also receives heavy-duty cooling – thanks to higher capacity radiator and engine oil cooler – and heavy-duty brakes with ABS, providing added safety for braking under specific conditions.
For an additional level of safety, security and peace of mind, all Tahoe Police Vehicles feature a tire pressure monitor, alerting the driver if any of the tires begins to lose air pressure. A tire pressure monitor is also included in the spare tire and must be activated prior to being placed on the vehicle.
Delivering underbody protection is the Skid Plate Package; it includes a front underbody shield that starts behind the front bumper and runs to the first cross-member. The Skid Plate Package protects such vital vehicle components as the oil pan and other key drivetrain components.
Additional standard equipment on Tahoe Police Vehicle includes a 26-gallon fuel tank, 160-amp alternator, a heavy-duty 730 CCA battery with run-down protection and extended-life spark plugs. Dual 730 CCA batteries are also available.
Chevrolet Tahoe Special Services Vehicle
The Chevrolet Tahoe Special Services Vehicle is available in four-wheel drive and is an ideal selection for K9 unit use, SWAT and various other applications where four-wheel drive and versatility are a high priority.
Tahoe Police and Tahoe Special Services vehicles are powered by a 5.3L V-8 engine delivering 320 horsepower (238 kW)* and 340 lb.-ft. of torque (470 Nm)*. It also delivers enhanced fuel economy, thanks to GM’s Active Fuel Management™ technology that shuts off half the engine’s cylinders when full power is not needed.
Fuel economy is further enhanced for 2009 with the inclusion of a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission on Tahoe Special Services Vehicle. (Tahoe Police Vehicle features GM’s Hydra-Matic 4L60, four-speed automatic transmission.)
The Hydra-Matic 6L80 is specifically designed for the performance requirements of SUVs. It features clutch-to-clutch operation, manual range selection an integrated 32-bit electro-hydraulic controller and a wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio – including two overdrive gears. As a result, the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic helps deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy.
Additionally, Tahoe can help reduce dependency on petroleum, because it can operate on fuel that contains E85 ethanol.
Tahoe Police Vehicle and Tahoe Special Services Vehicle are designed to be among the industry's safest and most secure vehicles, with a 360-degree perimeter safety system of occupant protection and crash-avoidance technologies. Features include a standard dual-stage driver front air bag; available roof-mounted head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for all seating rows; and front-seat safety belt pretensioners that are linked to the vehicle's sensing system to provide segment-exclusive deployment in rear-end crashes.
Chevrolet Express Prisoner Transport Van
Whether for tactical uses or to transport materials or people, the Chevy Express Prisoner Transport Van delivers performance, efficiency, the flexibility of two wheelbases and a lot of standard equipment for the money.
Express Prisoner Transport Van is powered by a 6.0L V-8 engine. Known for its greater durability and quiet operation, the 6.0L V-8 delivers 300 horsepower (224 kW) at 4,400 rpm and 360 lb.-ft. of torque (488 Nm) at 4,000 rpm, making this the most powerful engine in its class. It’s mated to a heavy-duty four-speed, electronically controlled automatic transmission with overdrive and tow/haul mode.
A fully boxed frame increases torsional stiffness on Express Prisoner Transport Van and contributes to improved ride and handling and better isolation from the road. Large, 35-mm stabilizer bars add stability, while standard 16-inch wheels provide for a more comfortable ride and power rack-and-pinion steering on all light-duty models provides more precise control.
Chevrolet Express Prisoner Transport Van also delivers a high level of standard safety content, including head curtain side air bags, tire pressure monitoring system, flat and convex exterior mirrors for a wider field of vision and Enhanced Technology Glass on the rearmost seats of 12- and 15-passenger models helps improve occupant retention.
Easy upfit
Because Impala Police and Police Tahoe vehicles were designed from their inception as law enforcement vehicles – firsts in their respective segments – they are available to law enforcement agencies with features that set them apart from their retail counterparts. Some of those changes are readily apparent. Police Tahoe is lower to the ground than its retail counterpart, delivering improved handling, especially at high speeds. The front and rear suspensions feature stiffer springs and shocks and there’s also a stiffer jounce bumper that is more ideally suited for police loads. Police Tahoe also features a fully integrated electrical system, making it easier for upfitters to install such police-specific equipment as light bars and police radios.
Additionally, similarities between Tahoe’s and Impala’s electrical systems enable both vehicles to function and upfit the same and to share some wiring harnesses. The result is easier upfits and lower costs to law enforcement agencies.
