The Internship Scoop

Thank you for your interest in GM's Communications Internship Program. Our program gives you an opportunity to intern with dynamic communications professionals in the highly competitive and fast-paced automotive industry. Our internships are not "making copies and getting coffee" type internships. The GM Communications internship involves real work, which generates real results for the company.  GM interns have the opportunity to learn and hone skills in media relations, internal communications, speech writing and event planning. Below are the internships available for 2015.

GM Communications internship applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree (communications, journalism or public relations degrees preferred)
  • Have not completed all graduation requirements before the end of internship
  • Have the right to work in the United States without sponsorship
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

2015 GM Communications Internship Positions

 

Divisional Brand Communications
 

Brand and product communications interns assist the divisional communications teams with various activities that promote key vehicles and support summer launch and marketing events. They take an active role in developing brand strategy; creating awareness and consideration with key audiences, participating in brainstorming and executing communications plans. 

  • Support vehicle launch planning and related media outreach and activities
  • Represent the brand and attend divisional media ride and drive and racing events
  • Assist with various conference sponsorship activities including project management and onsite support
  • Mine, pitch and place interesting and targeted divisional “stories”
  • Write and develop divisional media materials http://media.gm.com
  • Write posts for divisional and GM blogs
  • Engage in social media outreach and influencer outreach, on behalf of the brand

 

Manufacturing Communications
 

Work with plant and union leadership to develop robust internal/external communications plans that support key business objectives and strengthen GM’s reputation in local communities.

  • Develop focused, compelling content and opportunities for dialogue to engage employees in support of product launches and plant business objectives
  • Publish communications materials such as plant newsletters and news releases.  Assist with photography, newsletter design and distribution
  • Work with community organizations and key stakeholders to boost involvement and nurture relationships
  • Mine and place external stories about GM products, customer-focused innovations and corporate social responsibility initiatives
  • Provide communication counsel (message creation, speech writing and presentation development) to manufacturing leaders
  • Assist with plant tours and presentations
  • Event planning and execution (e.g. press conferences, VIP visits, employee forums, open house activities, vehicle displays, etc.)
  • Work with community organizations and key stakeholders to boost involvement and relationships

 

GM News Operations
 

General Motors has many professionals who help to manage and extend the reach of its news every day. The corporate News Operations Team is GM’s center of expertise and assists their communications colleagues. This news-loving intern will rotate through and support the corporate, broadcast; news bureau, consumer affairs, GM Foundation and social media teams to help tell GM and its divisional brand “stories” throughout the summer. 

  • Creatively tell GM’s “stories” through its social web channels including writing blog posts for General Motors corporate blog http://fastlane.gmblogs.com/
  • Help extend corporate news on GM’s social media channels as well as developing relationships with influential bloggers
  • Write releases and other content for the media site http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/news.html
  • Assist broadcast team with video shoots, story development and media pitching
  • Organize and lead a corporate news activity
  • Assist Consumer Affairs lead at a regional news event
  • Help plan and promote a GM Foundation activity
  • Provide assistance with various news announcements and events
