Rüsselsheim. With space for up to seven people and a uniquely
flexible interior (thanks to the versatile Flex7 seating system), the Opel
Zafira compact van is still setting the standard in its class three years
after its debut. In Germany, the Zafira has been its segment leader since
its launch in spring 1999.
Since the fall of 2001 full-size curtain airbags for all four outer
passengers in the first and second rows provide even more safety in the
Zafira (‘Elegance’ and above). Additional new features for Opel’s popular
compact MPV include a choice of two types of 16" alloy wheels (five-spoke
sports design and five-spoke design with wide-spoke styling), as well as
sport seats for the entry-level version and heated leather seats for
‘Comfort’ and ‘Elegance’ models. An auto-dimming rear-view mirror is
available for ‘Elegance’ models, and the optional NCDR 1100 navigation
system now can be combined with a color monitor.
The Opel Zafira is now also available with a 2.2 liter turbodiesel with
five-gear manual transmission. This modern ECOTEC engine produces 92 kW/125
hp and weighs in with a maximum torque of 280 Nm. With the 2.2 DTI, the
Zafira is the most powerful diesel in its class. It reaches a top speed of
187 km/h and can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in only
11.5 seconds. But despite all its dynamic characteristics, the Zafira 2.2
DTI is a champion when it comes to fuel economy. It consumes a mere 6.9
liters of diesel fuel per
100 kilometers (MVEG), a rate similar to that of the 2.0 DTI. The 2.2. DTI
has all the features of a modern turbodiesel: direct fuel injection,
variable turbine geometry, intercooling, high-pressure injection at 1800
bar, four-valve technology and two counter-rotating balance shafts. The
Zafira 2.2 DTI also meets the stringent Euro 3 standards.
Low-Emission Natural-Gas Variant with Full Flex7 Variability
The Zafira 1.6 CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) model represents a
technological innovation offered in a standard production model. Storing the
fuel tanks under the floor of the vehicle makes it possible to offer a
seven-seater complete with the versatile Flex7 variable seating system. The
vehicle’s novel Monovalentplus design is characterized by
lower operating costs and reduced emission levels. But makes no compromises
in practicality or driving enjoyment. The Zafira 1.6 CNG is equipped with an
ECOTEC 1.6 gasoline engine (71 kW/97 hp) which has been modified to use
natural gas. Sporting four under-the-floor natural gas tanks holding a total
of 110 liters, the MPV also has a 14-liter reserve gasoline tank. So if
natural gas starts to run low and there isn’t a natural-gas filling station
nearby, drivers can simply switch over to the reserve gasoline supply. This
increases the vehicle’s total range from 350 kilometres to around 500.
Europe’s Fastest MPV – the Zafira OPC
With a top speed of 220 km/h, the Zafira OPC is the fastest MPV in
Europe. Designed at the Opel Performance Center, this exclusive sports van
is powered by the same potent 141 kW/192 hp 2.0 ECOTEC turbo engine found in
the Astra Coupé Turbo and now in the Astra Cabrio Turbo. This 2.0 ECOTEC
unit propels the Zafira OPC to 100 km/h from a standstill in just 8.2
seconds. Yet despite this outstanding performance, MVEG tests show that it
only needs 10.1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers on average. The DSA (Dynamic
SAfety) sport suspension has been tuned to match the versatile seven-seater’s
sporty performance. It has firmer spring and shock absorber settings, and
the ‘TC Plus’ traction control system and ESP intervene later than usual. A
high-performance, 16-inch brake system with 308 mm front and 264 millimeter
rear discs ensures efficient deceleration. The front discs are ventilated.
The flared wheel arches house exclusive OPC alloy wheels with wide 225/45 R
17 tires.
ECOTEC Gasoline and Diesel Engines: Clean, Lively, Economical
Opel’s top-of-the-range Zafira, after the OPC version, boasts a 2.2-liter
aluminium gasoline engine producing 108 kW/147 hp. This can propel the
compact van from 0 to 100 km/h in just 10 seconds – yet overall fuel economy
remains good at 8.9 liters per 100km (MVEG). Other gasoline engines include
the 92 kW/125 hp 1.8 ECOTEC and the 74 kW/100 hp 1.6 ECOTEC units. All
Zafira gasoline engines already meet Euro 4 emission limits. In
addition.2.2-liter models are fitted with Opel’s ESP (Electronic Stability
Program) as a standard feature; the system is available as an option for
1.8 ECOTEC models.
Despite its economical ways, the 74 kW/100 hp ECOTEC 2.0 DTi 16V diesel
engine provides the Zafira with generous reserves of power. This 16 valve
direct-injection unit has a maximum torque of 230Nm and yet consumes just
6.6 liters per 100 km (MVEG). New to the Zafira program, and just as
economical, the 2.2 DTI turbodiesel with 280 Nm of torque, also features the
most modern four-valve, direct-injection and intercooling systems. The
ECOTEC engine delivers 92 kW/125 hp, making the compact van the most
powerful diesel in its class. Just as in the 2.2-liter gasoline engine
version, the 2.2 DTI is also equipped with ESP and TC plus traction control.
Infotainment Range Includes DVD
As of now, Zafira buyers can order the new ‘Autovision’ in-car
entertainment system for the seven-seater. This option will also be
available with the Omega station wagon this year. This compact video
console, complete with DVD player, is located in the headlining of the car
level with the front seat head rests. The seven-inch" screen swings down at
the touch of a button. To make sure the driver is not distracted by the
movie, the sound is transmitted via infrared directly to passengers’
headphones. Besides using the DVD system to view films, second and third-row
passengers also can connect their games console to the Autovision system,
play conventional audio and data CDs or show their own digital camera
photographs or camcorder productions.
