2014 Silverado Design Builds on the Strength of Experience

SAN ANTONIO – Silverado’s exterior design blends strong Chevy truck heritage with a modern aesthetic. The new design is more muscular, with a stronger presence on the road, reflecting the enhanced capability of the new Silverado. At the same time, it is more refined and aerodynamic, reducing wind noise in the cabin and enhancing fuel economy on the highway.

“The 2014 Silverado’s exterior is all-Chevrolet, with style that blends functionality and refinement unlike anything else in the segment,” said Tom Peters, exterior design director. “It wasn’t enough to simply restyle the Silverado. The design had to reinforce its mission be stronger, smarter and more capable.”

Like work boots, blue jeans and leather jackets, Chevrolet pickups have been cultural icons for more than 95 years because they combine timeless appeal with rock-solid capability. The 2014 Silverado 1500 continues this tradition, with purposeful design that grows even more appealing the more you drive and use the truck.

The new Silverado backs up its muscular appearance with customer-focused attention to detail. Wider rear crew cab doors, for example, make it easier to get in and out of the Silverado, while the pickup box’s two-tier loading design and a new CornerStep bumper make it easier to load and retrieve items.

At the front, the 2014 Silverado’s signature bold, upright two-port grille appears wider, thanks to restyled headlamps pushed to the corners, enhancing the truck’s stance. The headlamps are a more contemporary interpretation of Chevrolet’s signature vertically stacked design, with projector-beam lamps standard on LTZ and High Country models – a first for Silverado – along with available halogen fog lamps.

A one-piece bumper – chrome on most models – wraps from wheel to wheel, reinforcing the confident stance. A new, lightweight aluminum hood features twin power domes that not only enhance the visual presence of the truck, but assist in guiding air over the windshield wipers, resulting in reduced wind noise.

The more aggressive design continues down the body, with sculpted body sides and prominent fender flares. Available rear wheelhouse liners provide a more finished look, while also helping reduce interior noise and shield the chassis and suspension from debris.

Silverado’s design also includes a new, smarter pickup box that’s stronger and more durable, easier to use and offers greater cargo flexibility. And for the first time, Silverado 1500 crew cabs are available with a longer 6’6” foot box, offering more cargo-carrying capability. A 5’8” box remains standard with the crew cab. Double cab models come with a 6’6” box length, while regular cabs offer 6’6” and 8’ boxes – with the 8’ box enabling 4’ x 8’ sheets of plywood to be hauled on the load floor with the tailgate closed.

A new CornerStep rear bumper, along with ergonomically shaped handholds built into new box rail protectors, provides that easier access. It is standard on all models except Silverado High Country. The box itself comes standard with a two-tier loading design that allows customers to insert a platform to separate items during hauling or conceal valuables below, such as power tools. New proportions, same garage friendliness
One of the most customer-focused design features of the 2014 Silverado is the re-sized doors. The rear doors are larger on crew cabs, with the cab structure’s B-pillars moved forward to accommodate them. Also, the rear seat was redesigned and the backs of the all-new front seats were tailored, adding about two inches to rear legroom and increasing the ease of entry and exit.

The longer rear doors are complemented by slightly shorter front doors, a design feature that again enabled Silverado crew cabs to offer greater accessibility without adding length to the vehicle, while remaining very maneuverable and capable of fitting in standard garages.

On double cab Silverados, the rear doors now hinge at the front, from an all-new B-pillar added to the body structure, for easier access in parking lots and other tight spots.

Color and trim details
The 2014 Silverado is offered in WT (Work Truck), LT and LTZ trim levels, along with Z71 and new High Country models, giving customers a wider range of well-equipped trucks offering premium features. All three cab styles and box configurations are available in WT and LT trim, with LTZ reserved for double and crew cab models.

The WT trim is subdivided in 1WT/2WT packages, with 1WT featuring black bumpers, door handles and outside mirrors. Chrome bumpers are standard on 2WT, LT and LTZ trims – and available on 1WT – with chrome door handles, mirror caps and body side molding standard on LTZ. Heated, power-adjustable and driver’s side spotter-equipped outside mirrors are standard on 2WT, LT and LTZ, with a power-folding feature standard on LTZ.

High Country builds on the LTZ trim with exclusive content and appointments, including unique 20-inch chrome wheels. (Please see the separate Silverado High Country release for more details.)

Z71 is available on LT and LTZ and includes a specific, off-road-style lower bumper appearance and unique grille and grille badge, along with off-road suspension components and specific interior appointments. Seventeen-inch wheels are standard with the LT trim and 18-inch bright-machined aluminum wheels are standard with LTZ – and available on LT.

Wheel choices for other models include standard 17-inch painted steel wheels with available stainless steel trim on WT, 17-inch bright-machined aluminum on LT and 18-inch bright-machined aluminum on LTZ. Eighteen-inch wheels are available on LT and 20-inch wheels are offered on LT and LTZ.

Twenty-two-inch chrome aluminum wheels are available on LT, LTZ and High Country as dealer-installed accessories. Silverado’s suspension is designed to accommodate the mass and performance dynamics of 20- and 22-inch wheels and tires, to complement their style with uncompromising ride quality and hauling capability.

The regular-production wheels are a half-inch wider than the previous model, which reduces tire flex for improved cornering and steering performance.

Ten exterior colors are offered across the lineup: Tungsten Metallic (new), Brownstone Metallic (new), Black, Blue Topaz Metallic, Olympic White, Sonoma Jewel Metallic, Stealth Gray Metallic, Switchblade Silver Metallic, Victory Red and – exclusive on crew cabs – White Diamond Tricoat.

Aerodynamically optimized
The new Silverado spent hundreds of hours in GM’s Warren, Mich. wind tunnel, where its new design was aerodynamically tuned to reduce drag for greater fuel efficiency on the highway and lower wind noise. Testing included scale models early in the development process and full-scale prototypes as the shape became more refined.

“Any air that goes through the front end must be usable,” said Diane Bloch, aerodynamics performance engineer. “We either direct air around the vehicle, or we use air purposefully. On the new trucks, there is no wasted air.”

On crew cabs, for example, the coefficient of drag is 0.41 – about a 5-percent improvement over the previous model.

“Five-percent lower drag is a substantial improvement, especially for a truck,” said Bloch. “We achieved it with a combination of comparatively large changes in the overall design and a myriad of small details fine-tuned in the wind tunnel. They all add up to a truck that slips through the air more easily to deliver greater efficiency and a quieter driving experience.”

The largest design change that improved quietness is Sliverado’s new inlaid doors, which fit into body sides rather than wrapping over the roof. When combined with new triple door seals, they reduce wind noise and turbulence, helping quiet the cab.

The front of the truck is carefully sealed to provide efficient cooling with minimal aerodynamic drag. A new grille opening reinforcement mounted over the radiator support and the frame is a primary contributor of the sealing process, enabling tailored alignment of the hood, fenders, bumper, grille and headlamps, for a tight fit between parts that enhances airflow through and around the truck.

Additional aero-enhancing elements include:

  • Headlamps designed to help direct air around the front of the truck
  • New outside mirrors are wind-tunnel-tested to deflect airflow around them and help reduce wind noise
  • The front air dam is higher at the centerline and lower at the corners than previous models, improving airflow under and around the bottom of the truck. Most trucks feature an air dam that is the same height across the vehicle, which is usually not as efficient. Also, the higher air dam enhances the approach angle
  • New tow hook seals prevent airflow through the tow hook openings. Models without tow hooks now include a closeout panel where there used to be an exposed hole
  • A new cab-to-box seal closes the gap between the cab and the pickup box to help reduce drag
  • New rear tire deflectors on the pickup box, in front of the rear wheels, help reduce drag by directing air away from wheels
  • An extension is integrated at the top of the tailgate to improve airflow over the truck
  • The tail lamps are tapered in the middle – reminiscent of an hourglass – to optimize airflow around the rear of the vehicle
  • A new splash shield under the truck creates a smooth airflow under the vehicle for reduced drag, as well as venting engine compartment airflow for cooling.
