  • DRIVE! 2022: Commercial vehicles important part of the Opel growth strategy
  • LCV business intensified: Steffen Raschig new Head of Opel Commercial Vehicles
  • Clear goal: Increased unit sales with new models and engines

Rüsselsheim/Munich.  Opel is currently writing the greatest comeback story in the history of the European automotive industry. By 2016, it will have launched 23 new models and 13 new engines – with the first of them already achieving great success. The commercial vehicle business is an important part of Opel’s large-scale DRIVE! 2022 growth strategy and here too it plans to expand significantly – with the aid of attractive, state-of-the-art products like the new Vivaro generation, backed by an equally powerful, new organizational structure.

Strong European commercial vehicles team led by Steffen Raschig

In the first quarter of 2014, Opel achieved a 3.6 percent share of the European commercial vehicle market – 0.1 percent more than in the first quarter of 2013. A prerequisite for continued success is the new Europe-wide organization currently under development for Opel’s light commercial vehicle business. To intensify its operation, all activities are being consolidated and expanded, with more than 20 staff added to the European CV team, bringing its total to 80 members. At the helm of this powerful team is Steffen Raschig, who has been the new Head of Opel Commercial Vehicles since May 2014 and reports directly to Peter Christian Küspert, Opel’s Board Member responsible for Sales.

"Commercial vehicles are an important part of Opel’s growth strategy,“ says Raschig. “We're focused solely on one task: making the Combo, Vivaro and Movano even more attractive and compelling by conveying their qualities to all potential customers in the best possible way. Our goal is to increase unit sales of these products by around 80 percent by 2022, from 83,000 light commercial vehicles sold in the past year to 150,000 units in 2022. As part of this expansion, we're also considering entering the market in other European countries."

New Opel Vivaro and Movano: More powerful and economical than ever before

To consolidate and further increase the success of its light commercial vehicles, Opel is not only optimizing its organizational structure, but also rejuvenating its product portfolio. The best example is the new Vivaro. Opel has invested 95 million euros alone in the British plant at Luton, where this most important guarantor of Opel LCV success is rolling off the assembly line.

The second generation of Opel’s popular all-rounder combines all the functionality of a commercial vehicle with the advantages of a mobile office on wheels, as well as the comfort and design appeal of a passenger car. This multi-variant van has been increased in length to provide more load capacity and cabin space. The interior also features Opel’s state-of-the-art IntelliLink infotainment technology with an easy-to-operate navigation system, in addition to design details enabling the fast and uncomplicated conversion of the cabin into a mobile office. Under the hood, are completely new and extremely economical turbo-diesel engines which reduce combined cycle fuel consumption to as little as 5.7 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of just 149 g/km – best-in-class values which benefit customers’ wallets as well as the environment. With all these attributes, the new Vivaro is continuing its success as Opel’s biggest selling commercial vehicle.

At the same time, the larger Opel Movano is now even more attractive. It benefits from state-of-the-art bi-turbo diesel technology which lowers fuel consumption by up to 1.5 l/100 km and CO2 emissions by up to 39 g/km – thereby reducing operating costs and the vehicle’s environmental impact. As regards safety, the Movano is improved just as much as the Vivaro: ESP is now fitted as standard and there are numerous driving aids, such as a blind spot mirror in the front passenger sun visor giving a substantial improvement in 360° vision. In summary, the Opel LCV team and its portfolio of commercial vehicles are optimally aligned to meet the challenges of the future.
