2014 Chevrolet Malibu Is Safer And Better Connected
Chevrolet Malibu is the industry’s longest-running midsize passenger car nameplate, spanning eight generations. Chevrolet has produced more than 8.5 million Malibus in the United States since its debut in 1964.
The 2014 Malibu is more refined and more efficient execution of one of the industry’s most competitive midsize sedans.
New, customer-focused technologies contribute to greater connectivity and enhanced crash-avoidance capability. The MyLink system allows users to engage their smartphone functions hands-free, while the Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert join Malibu’s roster of advanced, active safety features.
2014 Malibu is offered in four trim levels, with a choice of two engines. The 2.4 L engine comes in LS, LT, LTZ and LTZ Premium trims, and 3.0L engine comes in LTZ and LTZ Premium trims.
The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices start from AED 78,000 for LS with 2.4L engine and AED 104,000 for LTZ with 3.0L engine.
Expressive and efficient exterior
The exterior design of the all-new Malibu carries DNA from its sister vehicles, the Camaro and Corvette, to bring a sporty sensibility to the family sedan segment. A wider stance, broad shoulders and an integrated rear spoiler bring a new athleticism to Malibu and give it a more aggressive appearance.
Other exterior design cues include Chevrolet’s dual-port grille, projector HID headlamps, larger Chevrolet bow-tie badges front and rear, and new Camaro-inspired dual-element taillamps. The look is complemented by a range of large 16, 17 and 18-inch wheels.
The Malibu's silhouette and its bodywork exhibit a high level of aerodynamic refinement. Malibu aero engineers and designers conducted more than 400 hours of wind tunnel testing to ensure optimal fuel economy. In addition to saving fuel, the Malibu’s new shape, dimensions and sculpted forms reduce cabin noise, another priority for midsize car buyers.
“Aerodynamics is driven by science.” said John Bednarchik, Chevrolet Malibu lead aerodynamic engineer. “While car designers favor wheel flares, sharp creases and other details that add style to a car, what catches the eye may disrupt the airflow, creating unwanted air turbulence and increasing drag. The new Malibu balances design needs with aerodynamic efficiency to truly benefit the customer.”
Nine exterior colors are available – Dark Burgundy, Switchblade Silver Metallic, Carbon Flash Metallic, Summit White, Placid Grey Metallic, Smokey Eye Grey Metallic, Sandy Beach Brown Metallic, Snowflake White Pearl and Deep Espresso Brown Metallic.
Comfortable and refined interior
Inside, the dual cockpit cabin design offers an inviting, spacious and comfortable environment with plenty of head, shoulder and hip room. Metallic or chrome accents and Chevrolet ice-blue ambient lighting in various locations in the cockpit add to the car's interior refinement. Noise-deadening materials have been extensively applied for a quiet, relaxed ride.
Further interior highlights include a new color heads-up display and the new Chevrolet MyLink connected radio that is located in the center stack. The radio is built around a seven-inch high resolution full-color touch screen and has a clean, icon-based display menu.
The new Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system allows users to open phone books, personal playlists, and photo galleries from compatible smartphones. Connectivity will be provided through USB, Bluetooth and aux-in. In addition, customers can opt to purchase an integrated navigation system.
New 2.4L inline 4 cylinder and 3.0L V6 powertrains
2014 Malibu features a lineup of fuel-efficient and powerful four and six cylinder engines that complements its European-inspired driving characteristics. They offer noise-reducing features such as a cast exhaust manifold, steel crank, low-noise timing chain and direct mount accessories that contribute to a quiet-cabin experience.
The Ecotec 2.4L dual overhead cam, four-cylinder engine with direct injection uses continuously variable valve timing to optimize performance, efficiency, and emissions. It produces 170 hp at 5800 rpm and 230 Nm of torque at 4600 rpm allowing it to reach 0-100 km/h in 10.2 seconds.
The 3.0L engine uses spark ignition direct injection and continuously variable valve timing to optimize performance, efficiency and emissions. It produces 258hp at 6900 rpm and 290 Nm of torque at 5600 rpm allowing it to reach 0-100 km/h in 8.1 seconds.
Both engines are offered with a Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic transmission.
Outstanding ride and handling
Segment-best ride and handling was a fundamental element for dynamic engineers, as they calibrated the Chevrolet Malibu.
A roster of integrated elements enable the dynamics of Malibu’s driving experience, including:
- A solid body structure as stiff as any in the global midsize sedan market, enabling more precise tuning and dynamic vehicle control.
- Proven and refined MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspensions.
- Hydraulic ride bushings and isolated lower A-arms that enable a more quiet and refined ride.
- Chassis control technologies include StabiliTrak electronic stability control, with full-function traction control, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist system and corner brake control.
- Large, ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes, clamped on by aluminum calipers, which deliver a 41 meter stopping distance from 100 Km/h with 17-inch wheels – or 2.4 meters shorter than the current Malibu with 17-inch wheels.
Malibu’s greater feeling of control starts with the body-frame integral foundation. The body structure is 20-percent stiffer than the previous generation, which translates to a more solid feel for passengers as well as enabling more precise calibration of the suspension and chassis components. More precise suspension tuning supports the car’s increased feeling of control.
The stiff body structure is composed of about 65 percent high-strength steel and ultra-high-strength steel. A finite element model computer program was used during development to ensure the optimal shape and forms of the steel, thereby eliminating unnecessary material that would add weight and detract from the Malibu’s overall ride and handling performance – and affect fuel efficiency.
Integrated within that stiffer body structure are new proportions that provide a wider stance. Compared to the outgoing model, the 2013 Malibu’s 2,738 mm wheelbase is 114 mm shorter, but with front and rear tracks –1,574 mm each – that are 63 mm wider in front and 51 mm wider in the rear, which helps the Malibu feel more planted in turns.
When it comes to safety features, the Malibu is one of the best-equipped vehicles in the midsize segment. The new Malibu comes with an array of standard active and passive safety features.
In the event of a crash, Malibu provides a strong structure with 65-percent high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels, full-length frame rails, a reinforced safety cage and impact-absorbing crush zones. This structure is designed to absorb the energy created in a crash and help preserve the structural integrity of the occupant compartment.
The Malibu has been awarded a top five-star rating by Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) and Korean NCAP. A total of six airbags, three-point safety belts and active head restraints are standard safety features. Rear park assist is available on mid- and standard on up-level offerings. Upper trims feature a standard rearview camera. An emergency stop signal is activated on all variants of the Malibu during severe braking.
