Peter Thom was appointed Vice President Manufacturing of Opel Group GmbH on July 1, 2014. The newly-established Opel Group GmbH is responsible for all General Motors operations in Europe. Previously he had been a Member of the Opel Management Board since January 2012 and Vice President Manufacturing in the Opel/Vauxhall organization responsible for manufacturing across all European plants since March 2012.
Thom was born on November 25, 1962 in Great Britain. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from Newcastle Upon Tyne University as well as a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Thom began his professional career in 1985 at Ford Motor Company, UK. In 1990 he moved to Toyota, Great Britain, where he became Assistant Plant Manager Powertrain. In 1994, Thom joined General Motors and started his career as Plant Manager Powertrain at Vauxhall Motors in Ellesmere Port, Great Britain. He was Assistant Plant Manager at Opel Eisenach GmbH in Germany from 1997 to 1999, when he moved back to the UK to become Plant Manager of IBC Vehicles in Luton. In 2004 Thom returned to Germany and took over the position of President of Opel Eisenach GmbH. In 2005 he was appointed Director Manufacturing Operations of GM do Brasil. Most recently Thom had been Manufacturing Manager at GM Shanghai in China since 2009.
Peter Thom is married and has one daughter.
