Cadillac Escalade Hybrid:
First Full-size Luxury SUV with Hybrid Technology
- Patented two-mode hybrid technology reduces fuel consumption and emissions
- Sophisticated all-wheel drive and Magnetic Ride Control active damping
- Top-of-the-line Escalade driving experience retained
Zurich – With the same level of refinement and performance as its conventionally powered stable-mate, the 2012 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid employs state-of-the-art technology to provide a more fuel-efficient alternative at the top of the full-size SUV segment.
Combined cycle fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are cut by over 20 percent while the use of hybrid technology also retains Cadillac’s acclaimed driving experience. The Escalade Hybrid has been named ‘Best Sport Utility Vehicle’ in the 2011 “Best of the Best” issue of the Robb Report, which covers luxury consumer goods.
Innovative hybrid technology
The Cadillac Escalade Hybrid benefits from a two-mode hybrid system that consists of an electrically variable transmission (EVT) and a 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS). These components work in concert with a 6.0-liter gasoline engine, which includes Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late-intake valve closing (LIVC) technology for additional fuel economy.
Key to the Escalade Hybrid’s advanced two-mode system – patented by GM – is its ability to generate electric power on-board for propulsion. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, two electric motors within the hybrid system generate electricity that is stored in the ESS to move the vehicle as required. The cycle repeats itself continually to increase fuel economy. The ESS battery pack is located under the second-row seat, where it takes up virtually no additional space and does not interfere with second- or third-row ingress/egress.
Fully blended regenerative braking also captures energy that would otherwise be lost during vehicle deceleration.
Designed with fuel efficiency in mind, Active Fuel Management technology enables the Vortec 6.0-liter V8 engine to operate on only four cylinders in certain driving conditions. Rated at 248 kW/337 hp and 495 Nm of torque, it also features an Auto Stop mode. Once the vehicle comes to a standstill – in city driving, for example – the engine will automatically shut down, conserving fuel and emitting no tailpipe emissions or noise. At low speeds, such in heavy stop-and-go traffic, the Escalade Hybrid may use only electric power. And for optimum efficiency, it will use both mechanical and electric power sources for propulsion.
Hybrid for the high end
In common with a conventional Escalade, the Escalade Hybrid reflects a commitment to excellence in design, equipment and performance. It is not surprising that in addition to improving fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions, the Escalade Hybrid’s advanced two-mode hybrid system contributes to a refined travel experience. Additional features of the hybrid powertrain and supporting systems include:
- Exhaust system and resonator, specially tuned for the 6.0-liter V8 engine’s Active Fuel Management operation, which maintains comfortable interior acoustics and a pleasant exhaust note during both four-cylinder and eight-cylinder operation
- Electrically driven 300-volt air conditioning compressor which reduces vibration and allows the AC system – with Escalade-standard tri-zone climate control – to cool the passenger compartment, even when the gasoline engine has been shut down in favor of electric power
- Energy Storage System cooling which is tuned to be especially quiet at low vehicle speeds in order to reduce interior noise
The durability and reliability of the Escalade Hybrid’s Energy Storage System is maintained via optimized charge and discharge cycles, as well as a dedicated cooling system that draws air from the passenger compartment. The ESS is warranted for eight years/160,000 km.
In true Cadillac tradition, the Escalade Hybrid’s cabin is defined by detailed interior craftsmanship and sophisticated technology, including a Driver Information Center with continuous displays of vehicle status; and an 8-inch (20.3 cm) touch-screen navigation system and audio system, with MP3/CD/DVD video-audio changer and Bose® 5.1 Surround Sound with 10 speakers.
Intelligent AWD with industry-leading Magnetic Ride Control
The Escalade Hybrid deploys advanced technology to deliver excellent handling and safety.
Highlights include: Driver selectable all-wheel drive. This offers the option of selecting four modes according to different driving conditions. ‘Auto’ provides active torque distribution between the axles in dry or variable grip conditions. ‘2Hl’ offers optimum fuel economy by directing all drive torque to the rear wheels. In consistently slippery conditions, ‘4Hl’ enables maximum traction by continually distributing torque between the front and rear drive shafts, while ‘4LO’ engages a planetary gear-set to multiply engine torque – ideal when recovering a vehicle that is stuck or pulling a heavy boat out of the water, for example.
For comfort and stability, Magnetic Ride Control – Cadillac’s industry-leading active suspension technology – comes into play. This is the world’s fastest-acting system and uses dampers filled with magneto-rheological fluid instead of using conventional mechanical valves. Electronic sensors “read” the road in millisecond intervals and damping resistance is altered almost instantly during hard cornering, acceleration and braking.
StabiliTrak, the computer-controlled, 4-channel electronic stability control system with Rollover Mitigation, also comes as standard.
