Johnsson joined GM in December 1983 in the Detroit headquarters as an analyst in the Marketing and Product Planning Staff. He held a variety of leadership positions in product strategy, sales and marketing in the U.S., Asia and Europe. In 1991, he was promoted to Regional Sales Director, Central Zone for GME/Opel Germany. He went to Taiwan for the first time in 1993, to launch the first locally assembled Opel Astra. Johnsson moved to Jakarta, Indonesia, in 1995 with the assignment of re-engineering GM’s distribution operations.
