Cadillac will be the first manufacturer to introduce production cars with Internet capability. The Infotainment system with online access is based on the optional high tech Bose sound system. It will be available in the 2001 Seville and the American executive DeVille sedan, for US markets.
The new technology and service package makes for a more comfortable journey and a more efficient use of time spent in the vehicle. The integration of wireless communication and satellite technology allows the convergence of functionality in the car.
The Infotainment system comprises the following:
- Internet access through the integration of a computer
- The absolute latest in navigation systems
- New OnStar services in the USA
- CD-ROM
- Sound system
While the web-enabled Cadillac is to be initially available in the United States, the technological advances it represents are due to be integrated into Cadillac models in the rest of the world soon.
The infotainment segment of the system, created by Delphi Automotive Systems, integrates complete full-function color map-based navigation with radio, CD-ROM and audio playback. It allows the driver to keep his eye on the road while safely interacting with the system. Apart from the display for the radio station selected and current navigation information, the screen remains inactive while on the road. All other information can only be viewed when stationary.
The driver has the following options:
- OnStar allows e-mails to be downloaded and read out
- Cell phone with voice recognition or keypad control
- Infrared port allows handheld devices like cell phones and laptops to exchange information
- CD-ROM drive plays music CDs and displays CD-ROM data and allows software upgrades
- Voice memo recorder to record voice messages and play back later
- All car occupants can activate the system through voice command
- Color map navigation system with audio turn-by-turn directions.
New OnStar Service in the USA: Virtual Advisor
Virtual Advisor provides drivers and passengers with direct access to favorite websites and e-mail accounts. The relevant news and information is converted by the playback feature of the Infotainment system from text into sound.
