2002 PONTIAC SUNFIRE: SLEEK AND AFFORDABLE
The 2002 Pontiac Sunfire picks up right where it left off: offering spirited performance at just the right price. Only this year it offers a new top-line 2.2-liter dual overhead cam four-cylinder engine, more standard equipment on all models and a few new colors to boot.
Unbeatable combination of convenience, performance and value
Sunfire’s 2002 model lineup gives buyers a choice of three well-equipped versions of fun: the SE sedan, SE coupe and GT coupe. The SE coupe and sedan provide plenty of off-the-line driving excitement with a standard 2.2-liter overhead-valve engine that produces 115 horsepower and 135 lb-ft of torque. The GT coupe ups the ante with 150 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque from a 2.4-liter Twin Cam engine.
After the beginning of the model year, however, Sunfire will have a new top-line engine -- the Ecotec 2.2L SFI L4 (L61). The new aluminum engine features twin overhead camshafts with four valves per cylinder for excellent response in city driving and confident passing and merging on the highway.
Quiet operation is one of the new engine’s chief features. Twin balance shafts located in the cylinder block cancel the shaking forces inherent in an inline four-cylinder engine, resulting in an engine that is smooth from idle to maximum engine speed. The Ecotec L4 generates 140 hp @ 5600 rpm. Other features that help make the Twin Cam smooth and quiet include a die-cast lower crankcase and a structural cast-aluminum oil pan, which stiffen the block and reduce radiated engine noise. The engine also feaures an isolated cam cover that reduces the transmission of valvetrain noise.
At 305 pounds fully dressed, the Ecotec 2.2L is the lightest engine GM has produced in its displacement class, and one of the most compact four-cylinders in the world. It’s also more powerful and fuel-efficient than major competitors, according to published output figures and EPA mileage ratings—mated to a five-speed manual transmission it earns about 33 miles per gallon on the highway, for example. Just as importantly, thanks in part to its high-compression application (compression ratio 10.0:1) it delivers superb performance for its size, with a broad, flat torque curve that customers interpret as "good driveability."
The engines are paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Built by the well-known German transmission manufacturer, Getrag, this transmission features excellent shift feel, as well as a synchronized reverse gear for easy engagement and a reverse lockout feature for enhanced safety. A four-speed automatic transmission is also available.
Both SE versions get 14-inch steel wheels with bolt-on wheel covers that contribute to a sporty look that belies Sunfire’s economical price tag. Sixteen-inch cast aluminum wheels with P205/55R16 performance tires are standard on the GT coupe, increasing its handling and road-holding ability.
For 2002, all Sunfire models also feature as standard equipment a tilt steering wheel, an auxiliary power outlet (not available at start of production) and an electronic trunk release.
Fun and responsiveness in a safe package
Sunfire is all about style and performance. Because it’s a Pontiac, it’s also about safety. Standard features like four-wheel anti-lock brakes, driver and front passenger air bags, side door beams and daytime running lamps work together to help protect the driver and occupants. Sunfire’s other standard safety equipment includes three-point passive safety belts and top tether rear seat anchorages to ensure proper installation of child restraint seats.
To help keep Sunfire where it’s supposed to be, the standard PassLock II theft-deterrent system immobilizes the vehicle if an attempt to start it without the proper key is made. Content theft protection, included with the remote keyless entry and power door lock security package, flashes daytime running lamps and dome lamp and sounds the horn during an unauthorized attempt to open the doors.
An interior that screams style, as loudly as necessary
Sunfire’s audio packages will provide all the necessary bass thumps a sleek ride like this one needs. Its uplevel radios include Radio Data System (RDS), which lets listeners seek and scan stations by their preferred musical programming type, access up-to-the-minute traffic and weather information, receive text information on the radio display, or even have cassette or CD play interrupted for emergency traffic broadcasts.
The premium audio system for SE coupe and GT coupe models is Monsoon’s 200-watt, eight-speaker world-shaker. Sunfire’s Monsoon system has been tailored specifically to the coupes’ acoustical environment. With eight speakers placed optimally to maximize sound, Monsoon delivers musical excitement, Pontiac-style. The eight-channel amplified system with active crossovers directs low, midrange and high frequencies to the appropriate speakers.
The layout of the interior will seem as harmonious as the sounds coming from those speakers. The user-friendly instrument panel cluster includes an analog speedometer, digital LCD odometer and trip odometer, tachometer, coolant temperature gauge and fuel gauge.
Sunfire’s front floor console with integral armrest combines sportiness with practicality. It includes two forward-mounted cupholders, a concealed coin holder, and ample storage space for tapes, CDs and other items. A padded armrest eases long tours.
For the budget-conscious who refuse to sacrifice one ounce of fun while saving some coin, Sunfire continues to show the light.

SUNFIRE ACCESSORIES PROVIDE FLEXIBILITY TO CUSTOMERS
Customers who want to add their personal touches to their Pontiac Sunfires for a "look fast" appearance or to express their lifestyles have many options from General Motors-backed accessories available at their Pontiac-GMC dealer.
Look Fast
American Racing custom chrome-plated wheels are as tough as they are eye-catching, and are available in either 15- or 16-inch sizes.
An aerodynamic ground effects package featuring urethane bodyside moldings and front and rear fascia extensions ready for paint-to-match finishing are the foundation of the "look fast" appearance. Additionally, available bodyside graphics complement the vehicle’s exterior color and a ram air hood enhances the performance look.
Customers can also add carbon fiber outside mirrors for a street-rod look or a rear wing spoiler for a track-ready look.
Inside, an interior trim kit features laser-cut panels in carbon fiber or brushed aluminum styles for the dash, doors and console. Also available is a Speed Glo Gauge kit that enhance Sunfire gauges with a choice of a soft green or cool blue glow at night with the flip of a switch.
Lifestyle Accessories
For those customers who enjoy "fresh air," a dealer-installed accessory sunroof features electronic open, vent and close functions as well as an auto-close feature that shuts when the vehicle is turned off. If extra storage is preferred, a roof-mounted lockable hard carrier helps store and protect cargo and can be painted to match the vehicle color.
Other roof-mounted carriers include one for bikes and one for skis and/or snowboards. Quick release attachments make loading and unloading a snap. All roof-mounted carriers require a GM Accessories roof rack.
Organization is easy with the trunk organizer, which features eight-inch sidewalls and an adjustable divider system. The organizer helps keep cargo upright, eliminates problems with messy items, and cleans up quickly with soap and water. Vehicles can also be equipped with vinyl or carpeted floor mats.
"GM accessories permanently installed on a new GM vehicle at the time of delivery are covered under the GM New Vehicle Limited Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty," said Jim Kornas, director of sales and marketing-accessories at GM Service Parts Operations (SPO). "GM Parts and Accessories permanently installed by a GM dealer after vehicle purchase are covered for the balance of the New Vehicle Warranty, but in any event no less than 12 months or 12,000 miles."
SPO, headquartered in Grand Blanc, Mich., markets automotive replacement parts and accessories worldwide under the GM and ACDelco brand names. For more information, visit the GM Goodwrench Service Plus Web site at http://www.GMGoodwrench.com.
