2002 PONTIAC MONTANA: NOW WITH THE SURE-FOOTEDNESS OF VERSATRAK ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

Already established as a top choice for minivan buyers who want flexible utility, comfort, and safety without sacrificing sporty styling or driving fun, the Pontiac Montana takes another giant leap forward in 2002 with the addition of GM’s vaunted Versatrak all-wheel-drive system.

To complement that AWD control with comfort and convenience, Pontiac will also offer the Gen III entertainment system in Montana, featuring a DVD system with a wireless remote. As before, Montana offers a choice of two different sizes: a 112-inch wheelbase and an extended 120-inch wheelbase, both with dual sliding doors. All Montanas offer optional power-operated passenger-side sliding doors.

All-wheel-drive traction on demand

The addition of GM’s Versatrak system to the Pontiac Montana minivan sets it apart from the competition—a minivan with all-wheel drive that still allows for a flat load floor in the rear, without removing the third-row seat. Versatrak is lightweight, quiet, efficient, and especially effective in low-traction situations. It’s one of the most advanced approaches to all-wheel drive on the market today.

With no pulling of levers, punching of buttons, or other driver action, Versatrak directs torque to those wheels with the best traction on demand when you need it. Twin gerotor pumps inside a compact rear drive module automatically sense the difference between the rotational speeds of front and rear tires in low-traction conditions. Before any significant slippage occurs, the pumps engage multi-plate clutches that provide drive to one or both rear wheels. After slippage ceases, the clutches disengage and the vehicle reverts to front-wheel-drive.

Performance on split-traction surfaces (one wheel track on dry pavement, the other on ice or snow) is notably superior than all-wheel-drive systems offered by the competition. The Versatrak system is compact, and adds no noise or vibration. Electronic and mechanical safeguards protect Versatrak from inadvertent damage from abusive overload situations.

Thunder Sport appearance package

New for 2002, the Thunder Sport appearance package is available on all extended wheelbase models. It consists of 16-inch chrome wheels, fully independent front and rear suspensions, unique two-tone leather interior, rear spoiler and special "Thunder" badging.

Gen III Entertainment System

Also new for 2002 is the Gen III entertainment system, featuring a DVD player with wireless remote. It also has a seven-inch video screen with on-screen programming, auxiliary stereo RCA jacks for video game systems and camcorders, and wireless headphones with separate volume controls.

Spacious interior and smooth V6 power

Montana’s hospitable interior continues to offer versatility and functionality. A variety of seating configurations accommodates the active demands of any family. Montana’s "space on demand" capabilities feature an available third-row stowable seat with convenience center, available with eight-passenger seating configuration on Extended Wheelbase models. In all, the Montana seats seven with four captain’s chairs and a split-folding bench in the rear seating row. Flip and fold second- and third-row seats are readily removable without tools. Buyers can also opt for eight-passenger seating with modular buckets in the middle row and a bench seat in the rear. Six-passenger seating with captain’s chairs in the middle row and buckets in the rear row is available on the regular-wheelbase version.

Montana makes a point of providing equal accommodations for all occupants. Rear-seat audio controls that come with the two uplevel radios can also be added to the standard radio. Middle-row passengers can select their own volume and medium (radio, CD, or cassette) from the rear controls, while front passengers select one of the other two program sources. While air conditioning is standard, an optional Montana package provides heating and air conditioning ducts for rear-seat passengers, along with auxiliary controls for selecting temperature and fan speed on EWB models. Auxiliary power outlets are provided in both the front passenger compartment and the rear cargo area.

The 3.4-liter V6 that powers Montana is one of the most durable and dependable engines with the best fuel economy offered in any minivan. It produces 185 horsepower at 5200 rpm, and 210 lb-ft (285 Nm) of torque at 4000 rpm – plenty of power to get a fully loaded Montana moving with ease. A special Sport Performance and Handling package contains sport suspension, 15-inch cast aluminum wheels, touring performance tires, all-weather traction control, and automatic load leveling.
