2002 PONTIAC AZTEK: BLAZING ITS OWN TRAIL

EDITOR’S NOTE: THIS INFORMATION IS EMBARGOED UNTIL 10/1/01

Last year at its debut it was billed as "quite possibly the most versatile vehicle on the planet," and this year is no different. The 2002 Pontiac Aztek continues to be in a class by itself, pioneering a new vehicle segment that it created. Aztek is a sport recreation vehicle (SRV) uniquely capable of exploring a new dimension of driving excitement, blending the athletic performance of Pontiac sedans with the versatility of minivans and the all-wheel-drive capabilities of SUVs.

For 2002, Aztek sports a fresh new look with a monotone exterior and new rear spoiler. The Aztek GT model has been dropped as Pontiac switches to a two-model strategy—front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive—to simplify the ordering process.

Flexible configuration, and more standard features than before

The Pontiac Aztek is an innovative, flexible and accommodating life-style support vehicle. As with last year’s model, two seating configurations are offered – bucket seats in front with a choice of a three-passenger flip/fold 50/50-split seat or dual captain chairs in back. The rear 50/50-split bench seats are lightweight modular designs that can be folded, flipped forward or removed to create extra space on demand. The rear seat captain chairs have fold down seat backs that also recline and are easily removable.

For 2002, many once-optional features are now standard. For example, the console/cooler that latches into the console between the front seats and holds up to twelve 12-ounce beverage cans is now standard. To further enhance Aztek’s road appeal, 16-inch P215/65R tires are standard to complete an aggressive Pontiac appearance. Also in 2002, steering wheel radio controls will come standard with the Dual-play radio or the in-dash six-CD receiver. There is also expanded availability of the optional OnStar communications and security service as well as the theft deterrent alarm system. These features and revised option packaging combine to make Aztek even more of a terrific value than last year.

Ultimate tailgate vehicle shows its versatility

Unlike other vehicles, Aztek has a wide, low, and flat load floor. Removing the back seats opens up 93.5 (2648 liters) cubic feet of cargo space. Drop the tailgate and Aztek can accommodate full 4’ x 8’ sheets of building materials. A dozen securely attached cargo anchors, a rear convenience net, and storage areas built into the side trim and tailgate sill help keep track of loose ends. The fold-down tailgate has two molded-in seating surfaces and a couple of cup-holders that are perfect for pregame parties.

Two optional cargo storage systems offer Aztek owners additional versatility. An innovative sliding rear cargo tray system supports up to 400 pounds of sports gear or home improvement materials. A dual-door pop-up unit on the right side of the tray can be subdivided into three segments that are great for holding loose gear; on the left side there’s access to a hidden storage area beneath the tray. Three modes of use are possible with the tray system. The rear cargo tray can be securely latched in place inside the vehicle, rolled-out over the tailgate for convenient loading and unloading, or completely removed and stowed in the garage by using the grab handle and built-in roller wheels.

The second option is a reconfigurable rear cargo net system. Two side-panel nets carry up to 35 pounds each. Two larger cross-vehicle nets restrain up to 200 pounds of cargo—100 pounds per net. In conjunction with Aztek’s floor-mounted anchor hooks, the convenience net system can be reconfigured in an astounding 22 different ways.

Sure-footed ride and smooth V6 power

An innovative Versatrak all-wheel-drive system has been engineered specifically for Aztek. Versatrak directs torque to those wheels with the best traction on demand. Twin gerotor pumps inside a compact rear drive module automatically sense the difference between the rotational speeds of front and rear tires in low-traction conditions. Before any significant slippage occurs, the pumps engage multi-plate clutches that provide drive power to one or both rear wheels. After slippage ceases, the clutches disengage and Aztek reverts to front-wheel-drive.

Aztek’s performance on split-traction surfaces (one wheel track on dry pavement, the other on ice or snow) is notably superior than all-wheel-drive systems offered by key competitors. The Versatrak system is so compact that it fits under Aztek’s low flat rear load floor, it adds no noise or vibration, and it’s smart enough to accommodate temporary use of a compact space-saver spare tire. Sophisticated electronic and mechanical safeguards protect Versatrak from inadvertent damage from abusive overload situations. What’s more, the Versatrak system operates on-demand, only when it’s needed, which saves gas compared to fulltime AWD systems. Equipped with Versatrak, Aztek provides a surprising 18 mpg city and 25 highway. For more information about Versatrak, see the "Applied Technology" section of the Corporate press kit.

Aztek’s wide stance provides superior control and stability. Its MacPherson strut front suspension is fitted with four-stage shock absorbers valving for optimum ride and handling. Its short-and-long-arm independent (SLA) rear suspension has been designed and engineered specifically for Versatrak all-wheel-drive models. Aztek’s innovative independent rear suspension gives it a significant handling edge over live-axle systems, particularly on irregular pavement. An optional automatic level-control system adds a bladder around each rear shock absorber; air pressure inside this bladder is supplied by an on-board compressor to maintain a flat vehicle attitude when heavy loads are carried or a trailer is attached. Included with the auto-level system is an auxiliary accessory outlet located behind the rear interior trim, an air hose, and a pressure gauge that is handy for inflating sports gear and bicycle tires.

All Aztek vehicles are powered by a smooth, strong 3.4-liter OHV V6 engine packing 185 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 210 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. The standard four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission has adaptive calibration logic to provide consistently smooth, precise, and firm shifts throughout its life.

Not only does Aztek have an impressive power story, it’s also extremely fuel-efficient when benchmarked against today’s rear-wheel drive midsize utility vehicles. Aztek gets 19/26 (city/highway) mpg on front-drive models and 18/25 mpg on Versatrak all-wheel-drive models.

PONTIAC AZTEK AND GM ACCESSORIES OFFER VERSATILE LIFESTYLE ACCESSORY PACKAGES

Driving just got a little more exciting as Pontiac Aztek and GM Accessories are partnering to offer customers a variety of unique lifestyle packages designed specifically for the outdoor sports enthusiast.

Pontiac Aztek, the world’s first sport recreation vehicle (SRV), was conceived to be the most flexible and accommodating vehicle on the market. Its versatility is showcased through four lifestyle accessory packages uniquely developed to suit specific customer needs.

In an ultimate expression of flexibility, Aztek will offer hiking, biking, camping and sport appearance packages. "Aztek customers are adventurous and desire a vehicle that supports what they do for fun. Aztek, along with these packages, will enable them to passionately pursue their activities," said Aztek Brand Manager Don Butler.

Lifestyle Packages

The camping package includes a custom tent that securely fits over the rear half of the vehicle while the liftgate and tailgate remain open. The result is a weatherproof tent that shelters the user from the elements in a comfortable, secure setting. Aztek takes the camping experience to a new level with a fitted air mattress that rests on the wide flat-load floor when the rear seats are removed or in the flip-and-fold mode. Consumers can instantly inflate the air mattress using the optional auxiliary accessory outlet located in the rear of the vehicle.

The biking package offers enthusiasts a choice of an interior- or exterior-mounted bike rack. The deluxe rubber all-weather floormats and washable water resistant seat covers are critical when trekking through muddy terrain or bike paths.

The hiking package includes a lightweight backpack large enough to store bottled water, towels and other necessary hiking items. When not in use, the backpack can simply be attached to the rear of the front seats. Hikers also will appreciate floormats and washable water-resistant seat covers.

The appearance packages have been designed for the image conscious. For the more athletic look, the sport appearance package offers a molded hood deflector, vent visors, deluxe rubber floor mats and window decal.

The array of packages is available for purchase through Pontiac dealerships.
