Pontiac Grand Am American Tuner Concept Vehicle Taps into Explosive 'Tuner' Market
Take an extremely popular vehicle with today's younger buyers the Grand Am SE substantially increase the "gotta have it" performance factor and the result is the Pontiac Grand Am American Tuner concept vehicle.
"The 'tuner' market is blazing hot, and so is our Grand Am SE. The American Tuner concept shows Grand Am SE customers how they can greatly enhance the performance factor of this vehicle with aftermarket products," said Jim Panaretos, Grand Am marketing director.
There's more than a hint at the performance aspect of this vehicle up front. A fully functional Ram-Air induction performance hood dominates this Grand Am's front styling cues and is complemented by an aggressive American Tuner front fascia with an integrated chin. Hella projector-style three-bulb headlamp assembly with clear housing completes the cars front view.
The Grand Am American Tuner concept looks as good driving away as it does driving toward you. It features an American Tuner-specific rear spoiler, a rear fascia with integrated chin, and a taillamp assembly that features clear housing and colored lenses.
This vehicle's "fast while standing still" styling is also apparent from a side view, with sporty, aggressive rockers that feature integrated extensions.
Sometimes, looks can be deceiving
but that's not the case with Grand Am American Tuner.
Under the hood is a supercharged, 2.4-liter Quad 4 engine that can deliver 190 horsepower and 200 lb.-ft of torque. Compare that to 150 horsepower and 155 lb.-ft of torque for the production model.
Putting that performance to the pavement is a Getrag five-speed manual transmission. The Grand Am American Tuner also features an Eibach performance suspension with fully adjustable struts. Baer stainless steel performance brakes with cross-drilled, slotted rotors and heat-rejecting calipers are included, bringing Grand Am American Tuner to quick and true stops. This concept further features 19-inch Roja Formula 7 forged wheels shod with Goodyear Eagle F1 P245/35ZR19 performance tires.
"Pontiac Grand Am has traditionally provided wide-track performance in a value proposition. With definite plans to take at least some aspects of the concept vehicle into production by fall of 2003, the Grand Am American Tuner package gives today's younger drivers a means of getting a customized compact vehicle that still fits their budget," Panaretos added.
