TO: Sports, Automotive, Business and Marketing Editors and Reporters
WHAT: 1992 Christian Laettner jump shot against Kentucky wins Pontiac tournament
College basketball fans have spoken and selected the unforgettable Christian Laettner turnaround jumper against Kentucky in 1992 as the Pontiac “High Performance Play of the NCAA Tournament.” The classic performance beat out Michael Jordan’s winning jump shot versus Georgetown in 1982. College basketball fans nationwide participated in the online voting. The tournament March 14 with 16 high performance plays, selected by the board of directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), and each week voters decided which performances moved on in the bracket-style tournament.
The online promotion was part of Pontiac’s integrated partnership of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sports championships. The partnership is part of Pontiac’s multi-year contract, with the NCAA and CBS, to become an official NCAA corporate champion. As the lead division for General Motors, Pontiac will celebrate the spirit of NCAA championships in 22 sports through its advertising, promotional initiatives and marketing programs.
