The Family of HUMMER
In the beginning there was a vehicle in a class by
itself, with extreme style and capabilities unmatched
and untouched by the competition. Backed by years
of military service, its off-road abilities were unparalleled,
its mystique universal, its name, HUMMER.
General Motors and AM General reached an agreement
in December 1999, in which GM acquired exclusive ownership
of the HUMMER brand name worldwide. Just three weeks
later, at the 2000 North American International Auto
Show in Detroit, GM introduced the HUMMER H2 concept
vehicle, a full-sized SUV inspired by the original
HUMMER H1, the rugged icon of off-roading.
The H2 takes the rugged characteristics of the H1
and refines them, adding more creature comforts while
maintaining off-road leadership. It's a bold and daring
interpretation of what a HUMMER might be in a more
civilized package of a slightly smaller size. Its
extreme design makes sure that H2 continues the eye-catching
appearance of its big brother.
"The HUMMER H1 will live on, its awesome reputation
intact, and H2 will expand the brand's offerings,
bringing the HUMMER mystique to a broader audience,"
said Michael C. DiGiovanni, HUMMER marketing director.
"While we'll eventually offer a full portfolio of
products, at its core HUMMER is and will remain an
extremely powerful brand that connects to consumers
on a decidedly emotional level."
At the 2001 New York Auto Show, HUMMER revealed the
next conceptual step in the HUMMER lineage with the
H2 SUT. The H2 SUT takes the foundation of H2 and
expands its capabilities to include an adjustable
midgate, an open-air sky-roof and a variety of state-of-the-art
telematics like 360 degree Night Vision.
By building a varied product portfolio designed to
authentic HUMMER standards, developing unique customization
packages customers want, and creating a consistent
branded customer experience in new HUMMER dealerships,
GM plans to grow HUMMER into a sustainable franchise,
all the while preserving the prestige and panache
already earned by the H1.
The H1, regarded as the world's premier off-road
vehicle, is available in four distinct models: 4-Door
Wagon, 4-Door HardTop, 4-Door Open Top and 2-Door
HardTop. Originally constructed for military use,
the H1 now traverses as many urban avenues as mountain
roads. "It's become a symbol of exclusivity and status
for rugged individualists in all settings." DiGiovanni
said.
HUMMER dealerships will soon expand in number and
scope of offerings throughout the year. "Like the
development of the production H2, the HUMMER dealer
expansion program will move swiftly and with pinpoint
targeting." Said DiGiovanni.
