GMC SIERRA HEAVY-DUTY MODELS EXTEND LEV CAPABILITY, SIMPLY EQUIPMENT SELECTION
Building on its strong heritage in the vocational field, GMC is introducing two new Sierra HD Professional models in 2002, with ultimate work capabilities for those who need more than transportation. Concept versions of the Sierra Professionals have been shown at SEMA and numerous other trade shows, where they generated strong public interest.
New Sierra heavy-duty pickups and chassis cabs also provide expanded low vehicle emissions capability for California, with their lineup of best-in-class Vortec gasoline and Duramax turbo diesel V8s.
And, as part of an enhancement affecting all Sierra models, equipment packages have been refined to simplify vehicle ordering and tailor the trucks more closely to customers’ wants and needs.
Sierra HD models, all new for 2001, combine segment-leading power with super-strong chassis and advanced suspension systems to provide Professional Grade work capabilities, exceeding the toughest requirements and expectations of heavy-duty customers. For example, both the Vortec 8100 and Duramax 6600 provide 12,000-lb trailering capability with either of their available transmissions. The lineup includes a wide selection of 3/4- and one-ton Regular, Extended and Crew Cab models, available in 2WD or 4WD, short box, long box and chassis cab configurations.
Sierra Professional models
The heavy-duty lineup’s new vocational trucks, the Sierra Professionals, are available in 2500HD 2WD and 4WD Extended Cab short box configurations (C/K25753HD) with a 9200-pound GVWR. They’re custom-designed to expand the work capabilities of contractors, builders and numerous other tradesmen who carry equipment and/or are prone to use their trucks as portable offices. The Sierra Professionals will be introduced in the fourth quarter of calendar year 2001.
Their interiors feature a full-length, custom-designed center console, extending from the instrument panel to the back of the front seats, along with a unique rear under-seat storage container. Both storage facilities lock for full security.
The center console has a front compartment, providing concealed storage for a PDA (personal digital assistant), cell phone and two auxiliary power points to charge them. It also provides a storage tray for smaller items like maps, gloves or CDs. In addition, it has an oversized "Big Gulp"-type cupholder and a second temperature-controlled cupholder that can keep beverages hot or cold, when the ignition is on. The center console also accommodates a thermal electric, seven-quart capacity cooler, provided with the ensemble, which can keep drinks and lunches cold or warm. The cooler runs directly off the battery and provides power continuously, even with the engine off. It uses a smart switch, which monitors the battery charge level and shuts power off, when necessary, to preserve the battery.
The center console can also be easily converted to provide hanging file folder storage, with two specially designed rails provided for that purpose. The rails slide into the center bin in place of the thermal electric cooler. Additional storage capability in back of the console accommodates items like folders and portfolios. Convenient storage nets on the underside of the lid and on the backside of the console provide additional storage. The console also has two additional power outlets in the rear for charging battery packs for power tools.
The lockable storage container beneath the rear seat is approximately 57 inches wide, 16.5 inches deep and eight inches high, providing a little over two cubic feet of storage space for larger vocational tools like rotary hammers and saws. Inside, it provides another 13.5-inch x 12.5-inch x 5.5-inch storage container for smaller items like electrical components, fasteners and plumbing repair parts.
Both Sierra Professional models have the powerful Vortec 6000 V8 and 4L80-E four-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment. The 2WD Sierra Professional is available in either SLE or SLT trim; GMC’s heavily contented SLE trim package is standard on the 4WD Sierra Professional.
Visually, the new Sierra 2500HD Professional models are distinguished by their molded-in-color bodyside molding, embossed with "Sierra Professional" in raised letters. They also have a full standard bedliner and top rail protector covers. Both 2WD and 4WD models also feature wheel flares. The trucks are available in all regular 2500HD extended-cab colors, except Toreador Red.
Increased LEV capability
The Sierra HD’s optional Duramax 6600 turbo diesel V8 is, without question, the segment’s quietest, most powerful and best-performing diesel. With the addition of a new exhaust gas recirculation cooler and minor modifications, the Duramax 6600 now provides LEV capability for all Sierra HD pickups sold in California, with both the standard ZF S6-650 six speed manual and the optional Allison 1000 five-speed automatic transmission. The trucks’ GVWRs range from 9200 to 11,400 pounds. The Duramax 6600 now also delivers the same maximum 300 horsepower at a lower 3000 rpm; its awesome 320 lb-ft (705 Nm) of maximum torque at 1800 rpm is unchanged.
Sierra chassis cabs and cab-delete models with GVWRs of over 8500 pounds now also provide LEV capability with either the Vortec 6000 or Vortec 8100 and a manual or automatic transmission. The Vortec 6000 mates to a standard NVG five-speed manual, with GM’s 4L80-E electronic four-speed automatic optionally available. The Vortec 8100, the industry’s most powerful gasoline engine, mates to the high capacity ZF six-speed manual, and also offers an optional high-capacity Allison 1000 five-speed automatic. Calibration revisions and new exhaust systems are used to provide LEV capability.
Equipment enhancements
Revised equipment packages tailor Sierra models more closely to customers’ wants and needs and simplify ordering. Some of the changes include:
- A new, more competitively priced base trim package
- Revised SL trim that now includes standard equipment like an AM/FM radio with CD player. The audio system with CD player, which replaces the previous cassette, is now also available as a freestanding option; it does not require luxury trim.
- Revised SLE trim, adding standard items like deep tinted glass and electrochromic mirrors with a temperature gauge and compass
- Revised SLT trim, with additional standards like fog lamps and options like a Cold Weather equipment group
Automatic door locking/unlocking systems on Sierra models equipped with an automatic transmission have been revised; the doors now unlock when the vehicle is shifted into "park" and lock when it is shifted out of park. The available automatic programmable power door locks can be conveniently programmed to unlock just the driver’s door or all doors. The automatic locking and unlocking feature also provides the flexibility to be disabled. The doors on manual transmission-equipped models continue to lock at 15 mph and unlock when the key is removed from the ignition.
Sierra’s standard sunshade now features a sliding extender, with a ticket pocket on the left side and a mirror on the right.
The Heavy-Duty Trailering option adds an adapter that permits four-way, as well as seven-way, trailer harness connections.
All heavy-duty models feature the larger "Sierra" rear tailgate badges, first introduced on the Sierra Denali, as a bolder expression of their unique Professional Grade character.
