2002 GMC SAFARI FEATURES POWERTRAIN ENHANCEMENTS

With its superior eight-passenger roominess and true-truck capabilities, the 2002 GMC Safari stands out from minivan competitors in its ability to handle diverse and demanding family needs. Exceptional towing and hauling capabilities highlight its professional grade character.

"Safari’s efficient size and big-truck capabilities really provide the best of all worlds for on-the-go families who want a smaller van that does it all," said Dave Kanous, Commercial Vans brand manager. "Options like all-wheel-drive and twin dutch doors further extend Safari’s versatility far beyond that of any minivan."

Powertrain, driveline enhancements

A new LU3 version of Safari’s highly reliable and dependable Vortec 4300 V6 now uses multi point fuel injection to provide longer lasting, smooth performance. With the same sophisticated design as many of General Motors’ V8s, the system’s central fuel injector delivers a separate flow of fuel to six individual hybrid fuel injectors, placed at the end of the fuel lines of each cylinder, for longer-life quality performance.

Improvements in the catalytic converter’s oxygen sensor and computer calibrations also improve long-term reliability by eliminating the need for an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system.

The Vortec 4300 is the largest displacement engine in its class. Its 190-horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque provide exceptional passing and hill-climbing capability, even under heavy loads.

New standard synthetic rear axle lubricant reduces axle operating temperatures during towing and hauling for increased seal performance and axle bearing life. As the premier tow vehicle in its class, the rear-wheel-drive Safari passenger van, for example, can tow trailers weighing up to 5400 lbs. When properly equipped with a 3.73:1 axle ratio; the cargo model can handle even heavier 5800-lb trailers.

The durability of Safari’s steering gear housing has also been enhanced through the use of higher-strength ductile iron.

Additional cargo van options

With its voluminous 170 cubic feet of cargo volume and heavy load-carrying/towing capability, Safari excels in handling serious work. Remote keyless entry, now available on cargo models with selection of power locks and windows, provides additional convenience and safety for commercial operators. Cargo models also offer a newly available rear heater for cold climate areas, and expanded seat color selections with the additional choice of gray cloth seats.
