2005 SAFARI – THE PROFESSIONAL GRADE MIDSIZE VAN FOR WORK
AND FAMILY TRANSPORTATION
Commercial customers looking for a midsize van with the largest
standard engine in its class – along with the most torque,
ample horsepower and loads of cargo capacity – need look
no further than GMC Safari. Its professional grade attributes
also make Safari an ideal choice for active families.
Versatility
Versatility is Safari’s middle name. It’s available
as a seven- or eight-passenger van or as a cargo van, and adeptly
meets those diverse needs. For families on the go, Safari delivers
170.4 cubic feet (4,825L) of cargo capacity with the center row
and rear seats removed. With only the rear seats removed, cargo
capacity is an impressive 104 cubic feet (2,945L) – the
interior volume of a typical midsize sedan. Even with all seats
in place, Safari provides 41.3 cubic feet (1,170L) of cargo capacity.
The interior volume dimensions are even more impressive for Safari’s
commercial customers: 47.2 inches (1,199 mm) cargo area height,
51.6 inches (1,311 mm) between the wheelhousings, 98.6 inches
(2,504 mm) load floor length (measured at the floor to the back
of the front seats), extending to 126 inches (3,200 mm) when measuring
all the way to the console.
Commercial and passenger Safari vans are available in rear- or
all-wheel drive, providing an added level of safety and performance.
Power
Safari’s power is derived from its standard Vortec 4300
4.3L V-6 engine delivering 190 horsepower (142 kw) at 4400 rpm
and 250 lb.-ft (339 Nm) of torque at 2800 rpm. That’s the
most torque and one of the highest horsepower ratings in Safari’s
class. The Vortec 4300 is mated to the Hydra-Matic 4L60-E four-speed,
electronically controlled automatic with overdrive. This combination
enables Safari to tow trailers weighing up to 5,400 pounds (2,452
kg). All models feature 16-inch wheels and P215/70R16 all-season
steel belted radial tires, with aluminum wheels standard on all
uplevel SLE and SLT models.
Enhanced safety features
Safari cabins provide smooth surfaces and energy-absorbing foam
attached behind trim panels, moldings, the headliner and all other
vital areas to protect occupants from potential head injuries.
A standard four-wheel ABS braking system featuring four-wheel
power discs, a highly responsive Hydroboost hydraulic assist power
brake booster and GM’s Dynamic Rear Proportioning provides
quick, controlled stops and additional safety alerts. The brakes
provide excellent pedal feel, including reduced pedal effort and
travel, and quieter operation and significantly longer pad life.
Compared to earlier systems, the Safari brakes provide:
-
Shorter stopping distances
-
More stopping power for high-deceleration stops
-
A reduction in maximum pedal force and pedal travel during
high deceleration stops and also during normal deceleration
-
ABS software with ability to recognize a half-system failure,
such as that caused by a leaking brake line; during half-system
operation, the red BRAKE telltale is illuminated and the ABS
module engaged in half-system operation.
-
Highly audible warning chimes to alert drivers of a failure
or malfunction in the braking system and the need for repair.
Chimes are activated whenever the red BRAKE or amber ABS telltale
is illuminated.
-
More reserve power assist for braking under specific conditions;
the system will continue to provide sufficient power assist
to stop the van, if the engine stalls or is turned off.
Safari also protects its passengers and cargo with such features
as standard driver and front-passenger air bags, child security
sliding door, battery rundown protection and the PASSLock theft-deterrent
system. A lockout provision also prevents the driver door from
locking if the key is inadvertently left in the ignition.
Value
To deliver the most value to Safari owners, options may be ordered
individually, rather than in equipment groups, enabling customers
to tailor Safari to their personal requirements. Passenger Safari
models are available in base, SLE and SLT trim levels; the cargo
van is available in base trim.
