GENERAL MOTORS 24-HOUR TEST DRIVE INCREASES CONSIDERATION
Survey shows 50 percent increase in purchase consideration following a test drive
DETROIT - "GM's 24-hour Test Drive continues to be a crowd-pleaser," said John F. Smith, group vice president, GM Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "As of the first of June, more than 120,000 potential customers have taken test drives, resulting in a 30 percent closing rate, which is extremely high for our industry."
"Customers are experiencing first-hand GM's high quality, exciting products," Smith said. "While we are thrilled with the high closing rate, our primary goal is to reach the portion of the car-buying public that doesn't consider GM when they are ready to purchase a car."
GM has the highest loyalty rate in the industry, according to R.L. Polk data. Over 67 percent of GM vehicle owners bought another GM vehicle in 2002. "Once we have them, we stand a good chance of keeping them," said Smith.
The program has resulted in about 35,000 sales to date. "Our data shows a large percentage of conquest and win-back sales," Smith said. "We are very excited by those results. Combined with a new ad campaign to close the quality perception gap about our products, and our traveling 'Auto Show in Motion,' we predict a strong increase in our consideration rates." GM's Auto Show in Motion events are held in major markets, bringing upwards of 12,000 non-GM owners to drive over 150 GM and competitive makes.
"Test Drive is a success! Our first customers were Ford-for-life customers until today. They are happy Chevrolet Suburban owners now," said Jim Crook at Chuck Fairbanks Chevrolet in DeSoto, Texas.
Owner Randy Farnsworth, Randall Pontiac-Buick-GMC in Canandaigua, New York, said, "What a great time it is to be a GM dealer. With the Test Drive program, people who may never have thought about considering a GM product are now purchasing our cars and trucks."
An added benefit of test driving GM vehicles is the opportunity to experience OnStar and XM Satellite Radio. Thousands of potential customers have been treated to a no-cost opportunity to preview these safety and entertainment features.
"We didn't think we needed it, until we tested it," said customer Charles Leitch from Carmel, New York, about OnStar on his newly purchased Pontiac Montana. "In fact, at the time I visited the dealership with my family, I was only considering some type of all-wheel drive vehicle, nothing more than that. It was my four-year old son who got excited when he spotted the Montana. So, we climbed inside and found the vehicle had so much to offer, including OnStar, a DVD player for our young sons, all-wheel drive and an integrated connection for the thermal electric cooler.
"That day, we took the vehicle home, experienced all the gadgets, configured the rear seats for a comfortable setting, and tested OnStar. The only thing we had to do following our 24-hour adventure with the vehicle was to pick out the color," said Leitch. "We love our Montana!"
The program began April 15, 2003 and runs through July 22 of this year. To date, over 4,700 GM dealers are enrolled in the second phase of the program, representing over 80 percent of GM's total sales volume. General Motors has 7,400 dealers nationwide.
All GM models are included in the test drive program with the exception of the low-volume, high-demand Corvette, Chevrolet SSR, HUMMER H1, and Cadillac XLR.
To participate in the test drive program, a customer must be 21 years of age, a licensed and insured driver. The customer must also leave his or her vehicle at the dealership.
