2005 SIERRA CREW CAB DENALI ADDS EVEN MORE STYLE, COMFORT AND REFINEMENT TO SIERRA LINEUP

Adding more choices to GMC Sierra’s model lineup for 2005 is the Sierra Crew Cab Denali and 1500HD, which deliver segment-leading levels of capability, comfort, refinement and safety. The 1500HD returns to the GMC lineup and is offered in a Crew Cab configuration that makes it perfect for a wide variety of tasks requiring extra-strong capability.

A Sierra Hybrid retail model is available in several markets and, with its unique starter generator and torque converter combined with its Vortec 5300 5.3L V-8, offers up to 10 percent improvement in fuel economy while delivering the same horsepower (295 / 220 kw) and torque (330 lb.-ft. / 447 Nm) as other gasoline-only Vortec 5300-equipped Sierra pickups.

The Sierra Crew Cab Denali replaces the Extended Cab version and brings standard all-wheel drive and superior performance.

"The new Sierra Crew Cab Denali is all about comfort and style, while maintaining the professional grade capabilities that have driven GMC to 10 record-setting sales years out of the last 11," said Craig Bierley, GMC product director. "It is the next logical step in giving truck customers the refinement and amenities they're asking for."

Sierra Crew Cab Denali joins the Yukon Denali, Yukon XL Denali, Envoy Denali and Envoy XL Denali in a growing family of expressive, well-appointed premium trucks and SUVs.

As with its Denali brethren, Sierra Crew Cab Denali features a distinctive front-end appearance, including a chrome grille, projector-beam headlamps and unique front fascia with foglamps.

Premium exterior cues also include body-color door handles, body side moldings, tailgate handle, outside mirrors, rear bumper and tonneau cover. Chrome running boards with integral mud guards further distinguish the Sierra Crew Cab Denali from other Sierra offerings.

Seventeen-inch wheels and tires are standard on all Sierra models for 2005, except 1500HD and Hybrid; and for Sierra Crew Cab Denali owners who really want to make a statement, 20-inch wheels and tires will be available during the 2005 model year as an option.

Inside, Sierra Crew Cab Denali exudes style and comfort. There is a Denali-specific instrument cluster and center console, a power-operated sunroof, tone-on-tone leather seating, a body-color and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Exclusive features, including an available power sunroof, enhance the Sierra Crew Cab Denali’s premium environment, as do segment-leading audio and entertainment choices. An AM/FM stereo with cassette and single-disc CD players, a console-mounted six-disc CD, and a Bose luxury speaker system with enhanced performance application, Audio Pilot noise reduction feature and seven speakers (including a subwoofer) are standard.

Rear-seat passengers can enjoy watching a movie on the optional DVD player. The system includes a flip-down, 7-inch (178-mm) screen and also can play both CD-audio and DVD-format discs. Two sets of wireless (infrared) headphones with independent volume control, a wireless remote control and three sets of auxiliary video/audio inputs are included.

"The original Extended Cab Sierra Denali and Yukon Denali set the benchmark for premium comfort and amenities in trucks and SUVs and Sierra Crew Cab Denali builds on that reputation," said Bierley.

The 2005 Sierra Crew Cab Denali replaces the previous Extended Cab Sierra Denali.

Style and performance

Supporting the Sierra Crew Cab Denali’s professional grade capabilities is the powerful Vortec 6000 6.0L High Output V-8 LQ9 engine. The LQ9 produces 345 horsepower (257 kw) and 380 lb.-ft. (525 Nm) of torque. It’s more powerful than any engine previously offered in a Denali model and boasts numerous technological innovations, including electronic throttle control, which does away with the traditional mechanical link between the gas pedal and engine throttle to deliver crisp, more immediate throttle response.

Backing the Vortec 6000 High Output V-8 is the Hydra-Matic 4L65-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. Based on the proven 4L60-E, the “L65” is built with heavy-duty components, such as five-pinion gearsets and specially hardened input shafts, to handle the increased torque of high-power V-8 engines.

The Sierra Crew Cab Denali’s other integrated powertrain components include full-time all-wheel drive and locking rear differential. The always-engaged all-wheel-drive system has no buttons to push, splitting torque approximately 60 percent to the rear wheels and 40 percent to the front. Combined with the standard locking differential the Sierra Crew Cab Denali has sure-footed grip, whether driving up a snowy road or pulling a boat and trailer up a ramp. This powertrain combination, along with a standard 4.10 rear axle ratio, allows a towing capacity of approximately 8,100 pounds (3,674 kg).

Balanced ride and handling characteristics are delivered by the standard Z71 suspension, which includes three-leaf rear springs and 46-mm gas-charged shocks at all corners. The Sierra Crew Cab Denali also is equipped with an advanced vacuum-boost brake system, which provides excellent stopping power for high-deceleration stops and optimum anti-lock performance. They also require less maximum pedal force during high-deceleration stops and improve pedal effort and feel during normal operation.

Crew Cab capability

The foundation for the Sierra Crew Cab Denali is the 1500 Series Sierra Crew Cab, which went into production for the 2004 model year. Both versions feature a 143.5-inch (364.5-cm) wheelbase with a specially sized 5-foot 8-inch (1.7 m) cargo bed and a conventional Crew Cab passenger compartment. The vehicle offers 49.6 cubic feet (1,404.6L) of cargo volume.

A 1500HD model returns to the Sierra lineup in the Crew Cab configuration. Equipped with the 300-horsepower (224-kw) Vortec 6000, the 1500HD has a GVWR of 8,600 pounds (3,901 kg) and, when properly equipped, can tow up to 10,300 lbs. (4,672 kg). Sierra 1500HD models are available in two- and four-wheel drive.

Sierra Crew Cab models have room for five or six passengers, with the front-passenger seat equipped with GM’s Passenger Sensing System, which deactivates the passenger frontal air bag under certain conditions to help protect smaller occupants. The system assesses the size of the occupant in the seat, based on measured weight in the seat cushion and tension in the belt system. If these measurements are typical for a small occupant or a child in a booster seat, for example, the air bag is disabled. A telltale in the rearview mirror lets the occupant know if the system is on or off (not available on 1500HD).

Diverse powertrain lineup

New for 2005 is the addition of an aluminum variant of GM’s Vortec 5300 5.3L V-8 (L33) engine. Featured exclusively on four-wheel-drive Extended Cab Standard Box models, this engine delivers 310 horsepower (231 kw) – that’s 15 more than the cast iron version. Additional customer benefits of this engine include a 100-pound (45 kg) weight reduction. The aluminum 5.3L engine will deliver all of the durability and reliability benefits that have made this engine a true workhorse. It will run exclusively on gasoline.

GM’s Duramax 6600 6.6L (V-8) turbo-diesel was already legendary for its awesome performance, but engineers decided to make it even better. Both hardware and software were upgraded in ’04, resulting in a 10 horsepower (7.5 kw) increase. Not satisfied with “good enough,” the engineers went back to work and the result is a 70 lb.-ft. (97 Nm) torque increase for 2005. Sierra 2500HD and 3500 owners will now reap the benefits of a powerplant that delivers 310 horsepower (231 kw) at 3000 rpm and 605 lb.-ft. (836 Nm) of torque at 1600 rpm when equipped with the Allison automatic transmission.

Hybrid highlights

Introduced during the 2004 model year, GMC Sierra Hybrid promises up to 10 percent improvement in fuel economy and returns all the performance and capability expected in a full-size pickup. The Vortec 5300 V-8 engine delivers 295 horsepower (220 kw) and 335 lb.-ft. (463 Nm) of torque – the same as its non-hybrid counterpart. Yet there’s something the Sierra Hybrid provides that standard models do not: it is essentially a mobile power-generating station, with four 120-volt/20-amp electrical auxiliary power outlets (APO). The power outlets are located under the rear seat of the cab and in the pickup bed. Customers can conveniently operate power equipment without taking up the bed space typical portable generators would use.

A key contributor to the Hybrid’s fuel efficiency is its ability to automatically stop and restart the engine under different operating circumstances. Instead of a conventional starter motor and alternator, Hybrid pickups use a compact 14-kw electric induction motor or starter generator integrated in a patented, space-efficient manner between the engine and transmission. The starter generator provides fast, quiet starting power and allows automatic engine stops/starts to conserve fuel. It also smoothes out any driveline surges; generates electrical current to charge the batteries and run auxiliary power outlets; and provides coast-down regenerative braking, as an aid to fuel economy.

Please see the “Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra Hybrid” section of the Fleet and Commercial portion of the Product Information Guide for complete details on the Sierra Hybrid.

OnStar upgrade

OnStar-equipped Sierra models feature new sixth-generation hardware with digital and analog coverage. OnStar’s Gen 6 hardware also includes upgraded hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the United States and Canada. Using the GPS satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar features core safety services and OnStar Personal Calling that allows drivers to make and receive hands-free, voice-activated phone calls using a powerful three-watt digital/analog system and external antenna for greater reception.
