CANYON LEADS MID-SIZE PICKUPS IN COMFORT, UTILITY AND PERFORMANCE
The all-new
Canyon pickup continues the GMC tradition of providing customers
with Professional Grade trucks. In the rapidly expanding GMC lineup,
Canyon offers an array of powertrain, comfort and utility enhancements.
"The
all-new Canyon was designed 'from the ground up' to give consumers
more in a mid-size pickup: more power, more space, greater functionality
and a comprehensive range of choices," said Craig Bierley,
Canyon marketing director.
Overall, Canyon's
exterior is both aerodynamic and contemporary. The new mid-size
truck is available in three body styles to suit almost any customer's
needs, including Crew Cab, Extended Cab and Regular Cab models.
It also comes in the popular two-wheel-drive Crew Cab and High-Stance
off-road models. The full range includes the option of either
two- or four-wheel drive.
Plenty
of power
Under the hood, Canyon delivers plenty of horsepower and torque
with two new inline engines, the Vortec 2800 inline four-cylinder,
and the optional Vortec 3500 inline five-cylinder. Both are based
on the award-winning Vortec 4200 inline six-cylinder engine introduced
in the 2002 GMC Envoy SUV.
The standard
Vortec 2800 2.8L I-4 delivers 175 horsepower (130 kw) and 185
lb.-ft. (251 Nm) of torque. The optional Vortec 3500 3.5L I-5
five-cylinder, the first application of a five-cylinder powerplant
in a consumer pickup, puts out 220 hp (164 kw) and 225 lb.-ft.
(305 Nm) of torque. Both engines feature electronic throttle control,
variable valve timing and coil-on-plug ignition.
Other powertrain
features on the Canyon include an all-new five-speed manual transmission;
a new transfer case for four-wheel-drive models; and the proven,
ultra-smooth four-speed Hydra-Matic 4L60-E automatic transmission.
"These
two new inline engines in the Canyon, with their powerful yet
efficient performance, fit perfectly into GMC's promise of highly
capable, professional-grade performance," said Jerome Thiebaud,
Canyon product manager. "Inline technology produces an engine
with exceptional power, smoothness and fuel efficiency."
Interior
- comfortable and spacious
Canyon's larger size provides outstanding room, passenger comfort
and cargo-carrying capability. The Regular Cab model features
60/40 bench seats, in cloth, with optional reclining bucket seats
(standard on SLE). The four-door Extended-Cab model comes with
two forward-facing rear seats with under-seat storage and a flat-load
floor. Crew Cab models feature front bucket seats, available in
cloth or leather, and a 60/40-split flat-folding rear bench seat
capable of carrying three persons.
Canyon delivers
a level of amenities expected in a Professional Grade truck, including
a driver information center with system readouts, optional electrochromic
inside rearview mirror with compass and outside temperature gauge,
and available heated leather front power bucket seats. Canyon
also comes with an AM/FM stereo and an optional in-dash CD player.
The OnStar safety and security system and XM Satellite Radio (continental
U.S. only) also are available.
Canyon provides
flexible hauling capabilities with a 6-foot cargo box (5-foot
cargo box on Crew Cabs), along with two-tier loading and a locking
tailgate.
Exceptional
ride and handling
Canyon's all-new chassis was designed to deliver exceptional ride
and handling characteristics. A proven ladder-type frame underpins
Canyon's rugged, rigid chassis. Rear-drive models have a standard
independent front suspension and a live semi-floating rear axle,
four-wheel-drive and High-Stance off-road models feature independent
torsion bars. On all models, 28-mm front stabilizer bars are standard.
All Canyon
models feature standard rack-and-pinion steering, to deliver precise
steering response. Canyon's standard four-wheel anti-lock brake
system (ABS) was designed for heavy-duty service, with tandem
power brake boosters, dual-piston disc front brakes with audible
wear sensors, and 295-mm diameter rear drums. Fifteen-inch aluminum
wheels and tires are standard.
In off-road
or inclement weather driving situations, Canyon's four-wheel-drive
system provides added confidence and safety for the driver. The
dash-mounted electronic "shift-on-the-fly" system allows
the driver to move from rear- to four-wheel drive at any speed
when road conditions demand a change. Enhanced power/torque-management
traction control also is available on 2WD models. A locking differential
is available on both 2WD and 4WD models. Additionally, three rear-end
gear ratios are available: 3.42:1, 3.73:1 and 4.10:1.
Advanced
safety features
Canyon offers an impressive list of occupant protection safety
features. Head-curtain side air bags are available for added side-impact
protection and driver and front passenger dual-stage front air
bags are standard on all models.
Canyon is
constructed with a reinforced safety cage and side guard door
beams to enhance the safety of the driver and passengers. Canyon
also features high-intensity composite headlamps and available
halogen fog lamps for improved visibility.
Other safety
features include: a highly deformable all-steel body, standard
four-wheel ABS brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, a new driver
information center, three-point lap shoulder belts in all three
rear seating positions and the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers
for CHildren) system.
The OnStar
safety and security system also is available. OnStar is the leading
provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services
in the U.S. and Canada. Using the Global Positioning System (GPS)
satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar services include
automatic notification of air bag deployment, stolen vehicle location,
remote door unlock, emergency services dispatch, roadside assistance,
remote diagnostics, route support, convenience services and OnStar
Concierge. OnStar Personal Calling allows drivers to make and
receive hands-free, voice-activated phone calls through a nationwide
network in cooperation with Verizon Wireless. Virtual Advisor
(U.S. only) gives subscribers access to personalized information
in a hands-free, voice-activated manner with no screens or displays.
Canyon production
will begin at the General Motors Shreveport truck plant in Shreveport,
La., in the fourth quarter of 2003.
