2006 BUICK LUCERNE DELIVERS V-8 POWER AND HIGH-TECH FEATURES IN ELEGANT PACKAGE
The 2006 Lucerne is Buick's most premium and elegant model, incorporating themes of the brand's new design direction. Loaded with safety, comfort and convenience features one would expect in a high-end luxury car, Lucerne is poised to bring a fresh approach to the large or full size sedan segment.
From its gracefully sculpted exterior design - featuring cues from Buick's most recent concept car, Vélite - to its smooth yet responsive ride, Lucerne reinforces Buick's reputation for attention to detail inside and out. The front-wheel drive Lucerne combines high-level technology and luxury features with a spacious, quiet interior.
Lucerne also marks the return of V-8 power to Buick passenger cars, with a Northstar powerplant that delivers an estimated 275 horsepower (205 kw) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (398 Nm).*
Following the Buick Allure midsize sedan and Terraza crossover sport van, Lucerne is the third new vehicle in Buick's refreshed portfolio in just over 12 months. Lucerne underscores GM's commitment to offer Buick customers a line of premium vehicles with elegant designs, finely crafted interiors and exceptional levels of power, comfort, quietness and quality.
Lucerne offers either V-8 or V-6 power, five- or six-passenger seating configurations, and a lengthy list of innovative safety and security features. Available in three trim levels - the well-equipped CX, elegantly appointed CXL or the luxurious, performance-oriented CXS model - Lucerne is engineered to meet a wide variety of customer preferences and compete across a wide range of domestic and import entries in the upper midsize, full-size and entry-level luxury segments.
Technology you expect in a luxury car
Lucerne is the first Buick to offer Magnetic Ride Control, paired with StabiliTrak, to enhance overall ride performance. Standard on the performance-oriented CXS, this system uses magnetically charged particles suspended in a synthetic fluid to continuously adjust the fluid's viscosity to varying road surfaces and driving characteristics. The system has quicker response than conventional valve-damping systems, while providing exceptional vehicle control and increased tire contact with the road surface.
Four specifically tuned suspension packages are offered. Lucerne CX is equipped with a standard FE-1 suspension, with 16-inch wheels. CXL models with the V-6 engine benefit from an F-41 suspension with a slightly firmer calibration, complemented by 17-inch wheels. CXL V-8 models also are equipped with 17-inch wheels, but with firmer damping and GM's magnetic assist steering system. The top-end Lucerne CXS features 18-inch wheels and adds Magnetic Ride Control - another first for Buick.
Lucerne has a complete range of comfort and convenience features befitting Buick's premium image, such as heated/cooled front seats; factory-installed remote start; Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist; rain-sensing windshield wiper system; the first heated windshield washer fluid application in its class; a nine-speaker, 280-watt Harman Kardon audio system; six-disc in-dash CD changer with MP3 capability; and DVD map navigation (interim model year availability).
V-8 power returns to Buick cars
While the Buick Rainier SUV brought the V-8 back to the brand, Lucerne is the first Buick car to offer eight-cylinder power in a decade. Standard in the performance-oriented Lucerne CXS and available in the uplevel CXL is a premium 4.6L, 32-valve dual overhead cam all-aluminum V-8 engine, rated at an estimated 275 horsepower (horsepower and torque figures are preliminary, pending certification) and coupled with GM's electronically-controlled Hydra-Matic 4T80-E four-speed automatic transaxle that is one of the quality and durability leaders among full-size car applications. Lucerne CX and CXL models have as standard GM's proven 3800 3.8L Series III V-6, rated at 197 horsepower (147 kw). Both engines feature electronic throttle control to seamlessly match driver input with engine response while maximizing overall fuel efficiency.
Strong design direction
From its capable stance and tautly contoured body to its interior refinement and technology-driven responsive ride, Lucerne reinforces Buick's reputation for overall quality and contemporary elegance. Lucerne's sleek new shape starts with a "waterfall" grille, flanked by jeweled, chromed headlamp modules. Chromed, contemporary portholes in the front fenders deliver a signature Buick design cue - four on each side for V-8-powered models and three for V-6 versions. A rakish, 60-degree windshield leads into a roofline that flows into a "faster" 70-degree rear window angle to the deck lid. All body gaps are tightened, as are the wheel-to wheel-opening relationships, and convey Lucerne's high quality and performance potential.
Expertly crafted, quiet interior
Lucerne's interior appointments underscore Buick's focus on elegance, comfort and spaciousness, with quality detail and a precision fit to every interrelating surface. As with the exterior, gaps are tight to create a seamless harmony between all elements. Using premium materials complemented by tasteful wood and chrome finishes and a flowing, cross-car design theme that is trimmer and sleeker than previous full-size Buick sedans, Lucerne's interior is as pleasing to the eye as it is to the ergonomic requirements of the driver and passengers. Lucerne's wheelbase is almost 50 mm (two inches) longer than Park Avenue, the car it replaces, yet is body is more than 89 mm (3.5 inches) shorter in overall length, providing an impressive 1051 mm (41.4 inches) of rear leg room and an additional 50 mm (two inches) of front seat travel to place Lucerne near or at the top of its competitive set.
QuietTuning throughout
Every Lucerne model, from the well-equipped base CX to the sporty CXS, is subject to Buick's all-encompassing engineering initiative called QuietTuning to reduce or tune out unwanted road and powertrain sound with the goal of providing best-in-class levels of ride quietness.
Starting with a stiff body structure, extremely tight body gap tolerances and an extensive wind sealing system, additional notable QuietTuning initiatives include laminated side glass in all four passenger door windows; noise reducing outside rear view mirrors, lower profile "structure-less" windshield wiper blades with a flexible airfoil surface; a new "double-isolated" powertrain mounting system; multi-layer steel laminate used for the dashboard/cowl stamping; composite nylon baffles in the roof pillars, rocker panels and cross-car structures; and composite wheel housing liners.
Refinements to the 4.6L V-8 for even quieter operation include a QuietTuned engine cover, revised cam chain tensioner, camshaft cover isolator mounts, and pistons coated with a Grafal polymer for quiet operation.
State-of-the-art safety and security
Lucerne takes a comprehensive approach to safety, with the inclusion of standard features that protect occupants before, during and after a collision.
BEFORE: With a newly designed energy-absorbing engine cradle and extensive use of high-strength steel plus injected structural foam elements, Lucerne's body structure is engineered to provide maximum occupant protection and minimum intrusion under a wide range of impact conditions.
Active safety and handling features offered on Lucerne include a four-channel anti-lock braking system and traction control; an `auto-level' rear suspension that automatically adjusts the vehicle height for heavy loads; and four-channel StabiliTrak electronic stability control with brake assist, which senses emergency braking situations and boosts the power as needed. Brake assist is a first for any full-size Buick sedan.
DURING: All Lucerne models have as standard six air bags: a dual-stage driver front air bag, side-impact thorax air bags, roof-rail curtain air bags and a segment-first dual depth front passenger air bag.
Lucerne's new front passenger dual depth air bag can deploy in two different shapes and pressures depending upon crash impact, seat belt usage and seat position. The dual depth front passenger air bag, which made its industry debut on the 2006 Cadillac DTS luxury sedan, is a first-of-its-kind technology co-patented by GM. Working with other front passenger safety features such as a weight-based occupant detection system, the dual depth air bag deploys in one of two different sizes from behind the instrument panel within milliseconds to provide optimal restraint for the front passenger.
AFTER: As with all Buick models for 2006, GM's OnStar-equipped Lucerne features OnStar dual-mode (analog-digital) equipment. OnStar's digital equipment also includes enhanced hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the United States and Canada. Using the GPS satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar features core safety services and OnStar Hands-Free Calling that allows drivers to make and receive voice-activated phone calls using an externally mounted antenna for greater reception.
The OnStar service standard on the 2006 Lucerne includes the General Motors Advanced Automatic Crash Notification (AACN) system, making crash data available to the participating 911 centers to help them dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster.
Lucerne demonstrates Buick's continued focus on delivering high-quality vehicles.
Lucerne is manufactured at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center, which received the Silver Plant Quality Award for North/South America in the 2004 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study.
*Preliminary, pending certification. A new voluntary power and torque certification procedure developed by the SAE Engine Test Code committee was approved March 31, 2005. This procedure (J2723) ensures fair, accurate ratings for horsepower and torque by allowing manufacturers to certify their engines through third-party witness testing. GM was the first automaker to begin using this procedure and expects to use it for all newly rated engines in the future.
